      1. F7 in GRUB2 of antiX-19.2_x64-full.iso doesn’t offer my screen’s resolution of 1280×800
      but option ‘ask’ with consecutive booting and pressing Enter offered more modes, with my resolution present.
      I happily gained glorious 128×40 tty resolution, which carried over to installation to HDD.

      2. I’ve installed proprietary nvidia driver version 340.108 (with troubles, but finally yes, almost yes)

      $ inxi -G
      Graphics:  Device-1: NVIDIA G98M [GeForce 9300M GS] driver: nvidia v: 340.108
                 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: nvidia resolution: 1280x800~60Hz
                 OpenGL: renderer: GeForce 9300M GS/PCIe/SSE2 v: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 340.108

      and now my tty resolution dropped to scrimpy ubiquitous default of 80×25.
      I’ve tried some recipes:
      https://askubuntu.com/questions/18444/how-do-i-increase-console-mode-resolution
      nomodeset xforcevesa vga=361
      which I don’t quite understand and may have omitted something important. GRUB itself has made it back to 128×40, but tty is still 80×25.

      1. How can I restore 128×40 tty resolution working with nvidia driver?
      2. Can I have even higher resolution, say 160×50?
      3. Can I set number of rows & columns manually, separately for rows and separately for columns?

        I am basing my answer on: https://varlock.net/how-to-change-resolution-on-grub-and-tty/

        edit /etc/default/grub with root privileges. For example,
        sudo geany /etc/default/grub
        Search for the line
        #GRUB_GFXMODE=
        Uncomment that line and change the value. In your case, it should be:
        GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x800
        Then, below, add the line:
        GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
        Save the file.

        Now, update grub, in terminal:
        sudo update-grub

        Restart and see if the tty resolution changes.

          still 80×25

            Maybe a bit more info on what you did would be usefull. Linking to a thread doesn’t give us your steps.

            based on your original link, did you?
            1. Modify /etc/default/grub in this way?:
            GRUB_GFXMODE="1280x800x32"
            2. Did you try this first before modifying /etc/grub.d/00_header? (needs a reboot).
            3. Did you modify /etc/grub.d/00_header and add the lines similar as your linked thread? what were the values?
            4. Most importand, did you do ?
            update-grub2
            or did you do ?
            sudo update-grub

            Then, based on my answer,
            Did you try reseting all previous changed (especially the /etc/grub.d/00_header one) before trying again?
            Did you try with or withjout the x32 option? With or without the GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep line?

            What other things have you tried?

            As you understand, we weren’t with you when you did these things. We can’t know what steps you did, if you reset all your changes back to default, or how did you install the nvidia drivers. There is a lot more info that could be helpfull.

            Look at this person, all the things they tried:
            https://askubuntu.com/questions/1149736/getting-better-resolution-in-console-mode-nvidia-drivers
            They ended up having to return to nouveau, but maybe that is not necessaryily your case.

              You are correct Xecure, you can modify the graphics mode settings for GRUB2 just as you have described.

              As the links and your excellent steps indicate, you have to set up the configuration in the correct order and reinitialize it after making the changes or it can’t be expected to work properly.

              Order of steps do matter.

                No offense, but why so many permutations? Try running the system as it was created and intended, first, get that working, and then change one little thing at a time, and make everything work with that change before trying any more changes.

                  Yes, what BobC suggests is the common best practice.

                    People wiser than myself write down or record the scripts of what they need to do to make things work the way they want, so that they can replay those same tweaks when a new release comes out. Or maybe teak them a bit differently when trying another distro.

                    Imagine trying to remember how to do all these things again a year from now?

                    I hope in time you will learn enough to replay those scripts to help others get over the obstacles as well…

                    Not complaining, just putting some ideas on the table.

                    PS: One last thought. The best modification is one that you figure out how not to need. You are free from its permutations and the effort to maintain it.

                      Xecure, utterly valuable link. I feel I was wasting my time.
                      Apparently,
                      need better graphics card hardware support – use nvidia,
                      need higher-resolution tty – use nouveau.

                      I have given up.

                      btw,

                      Most importand, did you do ?
                      update-grub2
                      or did you do ?
                      sudo update-grub

                      /usr/sbin/update-grub
                      and
                      /usr/sbin/update-grub2 contain no differences
                      and no differences encountered in running as genuine root vs sudo
