I’m a new user of antiX and really happy with the performance. Unfortunately, it seems to have a random freeze that I notice is frequent when using any video intense app in the browser e.g. YouTube or wave.video (video editor).

The entire system freezes on the screen but I am able to move the mouse cursor around. But no clicks or other windows can be accessed. The only way to recover the system is with a hard boot pressing the power key.

I was also trying to install the Nvidia drivers to see if that could resolve the problem but seems it does not install correctly on this old system.

From what you are describing it seems that your graphical card may not be working correctly in antiX.
        If may be:
-hardware fault (ex: the card orver heats when performing resoruce intensive tasks)
        – Kernel problem,- try a new kernel
        – etc.

Please post your full system info so folks here can try to help you – you didn’t even say what antix version you installed – 19 or 21? (I assume it’s 21, since you posted here) 32bits or 64bits? Full?… etc… Not even the most expert forum user here is a wizard that will guess your system’s info!

Edit: your problem may be related to what you say here: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/kernel-5-10-57-dont-boot-after-update/#post-81401

Also instead of hard booting you can try pressing ….. control + alt + backspace
          to restart X.

None of the keys work. I have to do a hard boot.

              P.

I don’t think it’s a hardware fault as I don’t see this problem using another variant such as Ubuntu.

Yes, The version I have installed is antiX 21 64 bit and full.

Please let me know if you need any more information/logs that I could extract and provide from the system.

The link that you mentioned above is a problem that I did face after I had to hard boot several times due to this particular freeze issue. The 5.10 kernel stopped working after a few hard boots. It was working fine with the 4.9 kernel. Then I tried to manually install Nvidia legacy drivers and the 5.10 started working again even though the drivers don’t seem to have successfully loaded.

Kernel: 5.10.57-antix.1-amd64-smp x86_64 bits is perhaps unwise.
                    Please read: *updated 15 March 2022* security-kernel-upgrades
Your device is from 2014, maybe see if it runs better with the 4.19 Kernel

Current patched kernels are as follows,
                    5.10.104 (64bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)
                    4.19.222 (64bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)
                    4.9.0-294 (64 bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)
                    4.4.0-296 (64 bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)

You gave no indication on which browser you use, if chrome chrome based please delete the cache
I just delete all in myusername/.cache/chromium/chromium
then disable hardware acceleration in chrome flags.

Another recently experienced random crashing problem was fixed by removing open java.

You might find some clues in ~/.desktop-session/current.log or pervious logs.

Please try another kernel, they are easy to install with control-centre > software > package installer > Kernel.
You can also update your 5.10.57 to the current kernel 5.10.104 this way by installing it.

By default the system will always boot into the newest kernel, so if you want to boot into 4.19 you have to do this with the advanced options in boot menu.(The boot order can be changed later if you find a better working kernel)

It looks like something went very wrong during the installation of the nvidia driver.
nouveau is still loaded here. There is no OpenGL.
How did you install the driver?

I am unable to see the kernel version 5.10.104 for installation. See attachment.

I had tried to install the Nvidia drivers from the Control Center and also from the terminal by finding out the graphic card and the correct driver to be installed. Both don’t seem to work.

I have tried it with different browsers such as Chrome, Chromium, Firefox and seen random freeze with all of them. For some reason, I don’t see the kernel version 5.10.104 to be able to install it. See attached screenshot below.

The kernel is available in the package installer. If you are unable to see it, have you broken your repo list ?.
May also be worth changing the repo to one near your location.using the conrol center tool.
                            The listyou posted is outdated..

                              Hi @krod16,

changing repositories: [antiX] Control Centre -> Software -> Repo Manager.
Please provide information about your repositories via ‘inxi -r’ if you continue to experience problems installing the suggested kernel.

Few other suggestions to decrease the probability of freezes (not related to potential driver issues but rather dealing with the limited resources):
                              1) Lower resource-access priority of resource-heavy programs by starting them as follows:
                              /usr/bin/nice <application name>
See ‘man nice’ for more details.

You may modify the action corresponding to the icon OR define a custom shortcut to start the application this way

                              2) Same as in 1) via a different tool CPU-limit, see e.g. ‘man cpulimit’ or https://www.maketecheasier.com/limit-cpu-usage-of-any-process-in-linux/

                              3) Use a different browser, use ad-block add-on and/or turn off most/some of the scripts running on the web-page e.g. via the Firefox add-on ‘noscript’.
This was discussed elsewhere in the forum.

One thought on the kernel not showing up is might have to run update in
order for it to be there. In a terminal

                                sudo apt update

I changed the repo location to somewhere closer. I also ran the command. But I still don’t see the 5.10.104 kernel available.
