Forum for users of antiX Linux. Mean and Lean and Proudly anti-fascist.
Antix quick news announced the latest antiX kernels being available.
I run an ACER TM290 and an ASUS eeePC 900, 32bit machines both with antiX-21. Both initially had kernel 4.9.0-279 after the OS installation, which I now successfully upgraded to 4.9.0-294 on both machines, follwing the advice in the quick note mentioned.
I’m not a Linux beginner, but making a decision about a kernel upgrade is kind of a barrier for me. And both machines run very well.
Can anybody give good reasons for an upgrade to 4.19 or even 5.10?
Thanks for any comment or advice.
Hans
Kernel 4.9 is an LTS release, expected EOL January 2023, https://kernel.org/category/releases.html
Your PC is supposedly running well.
I think that there is no significant reason to upgrade kernel yet.
In general:
Why upgrade kernel if my PC is already running (quite) well?
1) If you are worried about security issues discovered in old(er) kernels. [Does not apply yet, 4.9 is still supported.]
2) If you have a new HW, the support is expected to get better with newer kernels. [Not the case.]
3) Curiosity (killed the cat) and/or preemptive testing of what to expect. [Up to you to decide.]
One should always keep one older (well-tested) kernel installed and reboot to them if problems with newer kernel(s) occur after its/their installation.
