I’ve read all the guides about the window manager. With the default setup, it would seem that Rox is handling these icons. But they cannot simply be right-clicked and removed like with other software, so how does one get rid of them?

Menu > Desktop and Desktop > Desktop Folder have nothing in them that correspond to ‘File Manager’ and ‘Help’

One minor criticism I’d have about the default setup is that there is no clear idea of which element of the OS ‘owns’ the subordinate ones. With KDE it doesn’t matter because you can right click Panels and Widgets and interact with them directly. Here, I have no idea where the panel is controlled.

‘pstree’ shows no reference to panel. I am guessing it is an IceWM element, but I find the settings files for IceWM and Fluxbox (am I even running this?) in the Control Centre to be a bit above my current level of understanding.

I want the system monitor thingeys gone, the task switcher to be icons-only (integrated with the app launchers if possible) and to be able to control what is shown and not in the systray.

[EDIT: I want the workspace switcher gone too, please]

      Grateful for any help

Yes, they really can be removed via a right-click menu item

        .

        item(s)
^———– items, plural, if you had rubberband selected multiple icons prior to right-clicking while hovering one of them

panel. I am guessing it is an IceWM element

Yes, it is. Instead of sending you to read docs regarding howto manage its panel, I’ll mention
          Menu } Settings } Preferences } Panel
most of the labeled settings in the menu options are self-evident

I want the system monitor thingeys gone, the task switcher to be icons-only (integrated with the app launchers if possible) and to be able to control what is shown and not in the systray.

After checking out the Settings submenu, do visit the wiki page that someone linked today in your “hello” topic. IIRC the wiki page does provide a walkthrough explaining howto adjust these details.

I want the workspace switcher gone too

here’s where you can toggle it:
          Menu } Settings } Preferences } Taskbar } TaskBarShowWorkspaces

You just need to turn things off.

            things to turn off

Explanations are on the IceWM Preferences man page. Its off of Help > IceWM > FAQ from the start menu

              Discipulus,

I recommend you change your current desktop, which should be Rox-IceWM (antiX default) to Space-IceWM.

Click Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops, Space-IceWM.

With Space-IceWM you will have similar behavior to other desktop environments you are used to.

If you don’t want desktop icons, you can choose a desktop that has Min or Minimal in its name. All icons will disappear from the desktop.

              Discipulus,

Eu recomendo você alterar a sua área de trabalho atual, que deve ser Rox-IceWM (padrão do antiX) para Space-IceWM.

Clique no Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops, Space-IceWM.
