Today’s updates to antiX include installation of libelogind0. Does this mean change of strategy and return of libelogind0 to antiX, or just an inadvertant introduction required by some random package?
At the same time seatd and libseat1 are being upgraded. So perhaps libelogind0 free option still in the picture?
This is antiX 21 Runit, JWM…
      Thanks and regards…

      P.S.:
Current composition (antiX 21 Runit elogind/libelogind0-free, JWM) proves very stable, with the smallest memory footprint ever and almost no memory leak, unprecedented in Linux world. Return of libelogind0 seems additional factor that might change the current perfect state…

I do not see any installation of libelogind0 with latest updates.

What does /var/log/apt/history.log or /var/log/apt/term.log show?

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I updated 2 antiX computers today and also no libelogin0 for me… So I guess it’s

just an inadvertant introduction required by some random package

What does /var/log/apt/history.log or /var/log/apt/term.log show?

            Both appear to be empty.
            Just to clarify:
I did not install. I just see this in Synaptic upon ‘Mark all upgrades’:
            To be installed:
            – libelogind0

            To be upgraded:
            – advert-block-antix
            – feh
            – libseat1
            – seatd

Currently I do not have libelogind0 installed. It apparently tries to install it in this batch of updates? I will try to identify which package requests this…
            Thanks and Regards…

              Identified:
libelogind0 appears to be required by rtkit. Turning off installation of libelogind0 entails removing rtkit.
Can rtkit be removed without adverse impact? It is antiX 21 Runit. Fully upgraded yesterday.
              Thanks and Regards…

rtkit is not installed by default.

Great! It is probably installed with pulseaudio. At least according to what I read on the web on real-time audio to prevent crackling.
I did remove rtkit and now executing sudo purge rtkit indicates that libgusb2 is no longer used.

I am going to keep rtkit uninstalled as well as libgusb2 unless I have problems with pulseaudio.
However what puzzles me is a sudden requirement for libelogind0 by rtkit. No such requirement was until today’s update and I do not recall rtkit having been upgraded recently.
                  Thanks and Regards…

                  Update:
Testing audio (after removal of rtkit and libgusb2) on several pieces the ‘official’ music of Grup Yorum, played from SMTube indicates no adverse audio quality impact, at least to my hearing.
I will do some more testing to be sure. Rtkit does not seem a hard dependency of pulseaudio, after all…
                  Thanks again.

rtkit in Debian is a recommends rather than a hard dependency on pulseaudio.

Just wondering, is synaptic set to install recommends? (Debian, but not antiX default)

I do not know where such setting would be for synaptic, whether to install recommends. At least I do not see such in Synaptic.
One way or the other it looks to me recommends are being installed. This rtkit must have been installed alongside when installing pulseaudio.

Just to mention further testing results:
I have permanently purged rtkit on one of my laptops and followed with today’s upgrade. In result the libelogind0 was not installed, just the five packages upgraded.
Have played many pieces of music, mostly the ones I am very familiar with, such as Grup Yorum, so I can listen to details of familiar sounds. I did detect any audio artifacts or distortions with rtkit removed.
Reading more on the web, it appears that the role of rtkit is questionable according to some reports. Some say it fixes some crackling while some others claim it actually causes some crackling on occasions.

So far it looks to me rtkit can be safely purged. Those users who have pulseaudio installed apparently have rtkit, which suddenly requires libelogind0 to be installed and this goes against antiX strategy, the way I understand it is. VLC does by default install libelogind0 for no reason at all, but as I understand it has been modified to not do such thing, not sure of this, as I do not have it installed…
