Hello all.
I am attempting to use rofi in my bspwm exploration. I can get it to run and work without difficulty. It is FAAAASSSSSSTTTT! What I am seeking are tips & pointers from anyone with experience(s) to share. TIA.

::Rofi was one of the app launchers that I tried in my quest for an app finder/launcher. It worked fine, but didn’t look that great (which is likely solvable via theming), and if I recall stayed running in memory. My choice after trying Rofi, Kupfer, xfce4-appfinder, dmenu, jdmenu and one other was xfce4-appfinder. It looked good and had good functionality, but did also stay in memory. I guess on the machines I have with lots of memory, it doesn’t matter, but on the pre-2000 machines they are almost always tight.

::@BobC I have no problem running rofi… it is truly blazing fast. I am hopeful someone will have dotfiles to share. I have found some nice themes, and will share my dotfiles once I get that far. Right now I have polybar working well, I, also, am pretty happy with my tint2 setup. Everything is running in bspwm which I think is quite excellent. I’m building for both the antiX and MX OSes.
My target platform used to be memory constrained but I found a $24 8GB RAM chip that the pc supposedly does not support (although it seems to work well). So memory is no longer a problem. But the machine is a practically new… 2006. π

::With rofi I just edit the theme file its self and I use Monokai.rasi Which is found at /usr/share/rofi/themes copy a backup first. with Deb10 anyway
You can change themes on the fly by typing theme or rofi then select run rofi-theme-selector scroll down to the theme you wish to use press enter to preview the theme or ALT-a to use that theme.
I edit the theme as root with vim or geany that way the next time I open rofi the change is already done and I don’t loose my way with the last line that I have just edited. On the fly so to speak..
You can also edit your rofi from your .config file as like this line of code (## bindsym $mod+d exec rofi -opacity “85” window -show combi) from my i3 you can find more about this on the web.
Also from your .Xresources file more on the web..
! Rofi
rofi.opacity: 50budlabs rofi editing and a whole lot more.. Sorry I know you do like video’s

::Thank you @Koo those are great tips. I just discovered how much better rofi works in Debian 10 (antiX19b1) than it does on MX. There’s no comparison. Like you I’m not worried about mem & cpu. A week a go I took all the family wealth ($24USD) and bought 8GB of mem for our 12+ year old laptop, that is the target platform for my efforts.
btw. I think I will break down and watch the videos you mentioned; although it will take me a while to get through them.
I do believe I’ll keep my version of antiX19 as a rolling release. Hopefully I won’t break it. π If I don’t stay in ‘rolling mode’, I think Debian’s release cycle is too slow to keep pace with bspwm, rofi and a few other tools I’m beginning to understand and enjoy.
Again thanks!

::I just checked Debian repos both buster and sid..
Debian rofi=1.5.1-1 / Git rofi=1.5.4
Debian bspwm=0.9.5-1 / Git 0.9.7At least Debian keeps i3 up to date. π
In the past with MX17 I had rofi running just great but was a Source build with meson.
The biggest trouble I had was with version dependence for the source build, these were installed from source as the repo versions were to old for the build..meson etc
I like what you are doing with your version of antiX19 the only thing that troubles me is their repos are too unreliable so I have removed it from my main machine still have it on my x220 and T430 but have not updated it in ages I run Debian-10 both these tops. Will install MX-19 on my main after release as their repos are reliable..
Keep up the Good work you are doing nice to see someone heading in a new Direction instead of GUI all the time. You have my Vote..

::Thanks @Koo. My objective is to broaden my horizons and try new things. I can’t expect my grandchildren do that which I avoid.(I have two grandsons). π
