It seems like you are more a normal user, rather than a programmer type, just based on what info you provided. Perhaps you had PCManFM on another distro and liked it, but didn’t like Rox-filer?

Firstly, Rox-filer is what I would call an “integral” part of antiX, being its default file manager and desktop, so without it, its possible many things related to it might not work right. That is the hazard of making major modifications to an existing system.

Secondly, I’m not saying there is anything “wrong” with PCManFM, but SpaceFM was an improved fork of PCManFM, and zzzfm is an improved fork of SpaceFM, so zzzfm works a lot like PCManFM and is already built into antiX and its functions are already integrated, tested, and working.

I don’t know how deep you are into this, but my suggestion would be to learn your lesson, start over, and do better next time.

My suggestion would be to change your desktop to zzz-Fluxbox and that will also have the effect of changing your default file manager to zzzfm. Try the system setup that way. If you have a very low memory machine, you could instead go with just the Fluxbox desktop and change your default file manager to zzzfm, manually.

If after working with it a few days, you decide you don’t like zzzfm, then go ahead and install PCManFM and change your default file manager to it. Note that I did not suggest uninstalling any of the built in packages.

Sorry, I don’t use Fluxbox, so can’t help with it. I like IceWM, myself.

PS: the min or Minimum desktops are intended for debugging problems, not for day to day use.

        That’s my 2 cents worth…

Its ok, antiX is very quick and easy to install. It’s better to have a normal working system than try to fight problems that affect many things.

The main idea here is that first you should try the programs already installed, and if you aren’t happy with those, its fine to add applications, and fine to make the new ones your defaults, but don’t delete the built in default applications because doing that might cause problems…

Rox-filer does some things nicely, but it doesn’t work the way I am used to working, so I would rather use a file manager that works the way I expect it to.

I saw where you are having spam blocking issues, and I whitelisted your user Id. Welcome to antiX 🙂

I don’t remember if PCManFM has a “Root Window” option. As ile suggest, if a file or folder is owned by root, a regular window may not be allowed to see it. Be careful changing things owned by root, please.

                For all it’s worth:

I did not remove Rox. I like to err on the side of caution, and did not want to run the risk making a regrettable error.

But I did install PCManFM, which I happen to like, and I use that quite often as a straight up FM.

mynaardt, The person that started this thread, viklas, said he uninstalled rox-filer and then had problems accessing files as root and had keyboard issues.

Yes, its not a good idea to uninstall system defaults unless you are a person that knows how to diagnose and fix problems yourself.

Rox-filer isn’t bad. Because many people like it, it is the system default. If we were to try to change the system default, anyone that would try to follow any of the help text or videos would have problems.

But no big problem, antiX comes with 3 file managers installed (rox-filer, zzzfm and mc), and you can choose for yourself which one you want your default to be, or add a different one, and make that your default.

Not only is antiX FAST, its also very flexible.

                        Hello vikas,
Regarding that. I have no problems accessing the root of the file system with mc, rox-filer, or zzzfm. Perhaps that’s a PCManFM issue.

                        confirmed antiX frugaler, since 2019

Same here. No problems accessing as me or with authority using antiX file managers, but I don’t use PCManFM, either.

Are you still trying to use PCManFM? If you are having problems, try it from a terminal like:
                          sudo pcmanfm

mc is a gem. It has so many features, and uses minimal memory and minimal CPU. I have it added to my toolbar and use it all the time.
