So after fresh installation of Anti X 22 I get message like:

      S.M.A.R.T. daemon: smartd failed!

At the bootup. However this doesn’t stops the boot process and the boot continues. How to resolve this error? And what problems it will cause in my system?

(I am writing this error message from memory as I have no way to take a screenshot of the bootscreen)

Was md5sum check done on iso?

I would not worry about it since it has to do self test of hard drive to check if it is on the way out.

zero “problems”. To understand what smartd is/does, and to troubleshoot its failure to start, you should begin by reading the manpage for smartd and the manpage for smartd.conf ….. and open your /etc/smartd.conf in an editor to inspect the default settings and to read the comments+tips.

smartd errors can be critical. It might be just not working right, or it might be saying the disk has problems. If I could, I’d look at the logs to see if it says what the problem was.

PS: I think roky is saying it wasn’t able to check the drive.

Please check your BIOS whether S.M.A.R.T functionality is enabled.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

Ah! That may be it. I recall seeing that entry in a recent BIOS I was adjusting. If it’s not enabled in the BIOS, then the software would be prevented from checking it.

Okay, so I checked if I could manually start the smart daemon:

                  sudo service smartmontools start

But it failed to start as well.

                  So I checked the runlevel:

                  sudo runlevel /etc/init.d/smartmontools

                  I got N 5

So then I went to etc/rc5.d

                  And renamed S02smartmontools to K02smartmontools

                  sudo mv S02smartmontools K02smartmontools

                  Then I ran update-rc.d K02smartmontools defaults

Following the instructions written in /etc/rc5.d/README to disable its startup at boot.

Did I did this correctly? It doesn’t shows that error at boot now.
