I run AntiX CORE solely as-is sometimes depending on mood, rather than using it as a starting point for further additions. All-hail core – the best cli environment I have ever used.

But I could use a pointer as to where to look for normal screen-blanking / saving as compared to my usual BASE install, which goes into a screen-save after about an hour of non-use. Sure, I could just use the virtual terminals in Base, but would like this ability to blank in Core proper too.

Should I look in the direction of XSET, or do I need to add additional X componentry to blank the screen in Core?

If your antiX core is installed, the usual thing for console blanking is adding a boot parameter to your Grub file (and update grub):
        consoleblank=600
Here it is set to 600seconds (10 minutes). Set it to whatever you want.

You can check if it has taken effect on the next reboot with
        cat /sys/module/kernel/parameters/consoleblank

I never got this to work on live properly, so if it fails, execute this in the console:
        setterm -blank 10
Which sets the console blanking to 10 minutes. You can again check if it has taken effect by:
        cat /sys/module/kernel/parameters/consoleblank

If you can only set it on the second method, you will have to have it execute on each boot, so add it to any file that executes on boot.

Thanks Xecure! setterm worked perfectly. Don’t know why I was trying to overcomplicate it.

Not only is it blanking, but it even puts my hdmi monitor to sleep as well. I thought it would just blank and leave the backlight on, but it worked better than I thought.

Huh, maybe this would be a nice addition to the antiX-cli-cc menus?

I just tagged the setterm command to the end of my .profile, and it works great on my normal working stick. Of course had to logout and log back in to effect the change.

Thanks again – core all by itself is … just .. so .. beautiful .. man … sniff. 🙂

Setterm actually worked so well that I put the command into

            /etc/rc.local

            just before exit 0.

This brings back some memories – to wake the screen, I just tap the ALT key, rather than anything else so I don’t accept or whack out some default with an inappropriate key at a hidden prompt before I can see it. Like bombing out a 4-hour compile once. Just hit the ALT key. 🙂
