kernelpanic
Hello,
antiX-17 (full install on SSD, formatted ext4) doesn`t recognize any SD-Card when plugged into the sd-card-reader.
(no show in spacefm, thunar, pcmanfm). using an usb-adapter doesn`t work either, while normal usb-sticks are recognized.
fdisk -l shows the internal partitions and usb-sticks, when plugged in, but no sd-card.
to make sure, the problem isn`t the cards themselves, I testet them on older installations of antiX on my other hd partitions on the same machine.
antiX-11, -13, -16 all working ok (installed on conventional hard drive, formatted to ext3).
just checking if the problem is caused by either the SSD or the file system ext4, I tested the cards on MX-17 (yes, call me mr. multiboot):
sd-cards are recognized.
web-research told me there once was a kernel-regression a few years ago where sd-drives were not recognized, so to exclude this I upgraded the kernel from 4.10.5-antiX.1-486-smp to 4.16.9-antix.1-486-smp. still no luck.
I find this very strange (didn`know that an operating system makes any difference between sd- and “normal” usb-storage), I´m out of ideas.
Did anybody encounter a similar problem with antiX-17 or has some ideas about this? thank you!May 25, 2018 at 4:00 am #10493Member

::All my installs have worked perfectly well up to & including 4.14.4 kernels.
Can you mount them from a command line?
Please re insert an SD card & do dmesg | tail & post that here to see if any one can help.

::mounting from commandline is not possible, because the device (should appear as sdc1) doesn´t even show up

::Is the card-reader showing up in
sudo lsusb -t -vAnd does the card show up in
sudo blkid
(very unlikely given the dmesg log you posted, but worth a look)May 25, 2018 at 6:59 am #10498Memberkernelpanic

sudo blkid lists internal drives only, plugged in card does´t show up.

::Looking at your dmesg | tail, it is seeing it as sdb1, so it should be mountable at /dev/sdb1 – why do you think it should have been sdc1?

::Did anybody encounter a similar problem with antiX-17…
I’m guessing you have a 64GB card? I don’t have a solution, but in the “similar problem” department I’ve experienced this.
For me, it is related to the size of the card (SDHC or SDXC) and which machine I’m on.Antix17.1 on my new System76 notebook can flawlessly mount and use any size/speed card I insert. (I love System76 because their gear is built to run Linux).
Antix17.1 on my new HP X2 210 tablet can only mount and use HC cards up to 16GB. Anything larger isn’t seen as mountable.Perhaps you have a similar problem.
Sorry, I have no solution. I quit researching it (and the kernel regressions/patches) because 16GB was fine for exchanging files with my HP.BTW: My System76 will boot Anti17.1 from an SD, too. My HP will not see any size card as bootable.

::@ fatmac:
sda is my primary internal harddrive, sdb my secondary internal drive (SSD), a plugged-in usb device would show up as sdc.@ clicktician:
my sd-cards are from 4Gb to 32GB, so the 64GB-and-up shouldn´t be the problem.I found a solution, however, it has to do with the automount-function of antiX, which was set to “enabled”.
setting automount to “disabled”, the sd-card suddenly showed up in spacefm and could be mounted with no problem.what I find really weird now: enabling automount again, the card showed up as well, it is not automounted but manual mounting is no problem,
so actually there´s no difference between automount enabled or disabled. it looks like just switching between the 2 settings has solved the problem.
sometimes things are just magic 🙂I don`t know what exactly caused this, but I´m happy with it.
thank you for your comments, guys!May 28, 2018 at 3:36 pm #10551Forum Admin

thank you for your comments, guys!I equate these problems in the ” I am in the Bad spot of the universe ” catagory in my mind. My next step in your shoes would have been to look in Gparted and if seen in there. Mount it from there. But you got sorted. So no problemo.
