antiX is so full of handy features that not even people that have been using it for years know about them all. Here is one little known pearl- Search bar, particulary Search bar icon
You can find it’s .desktop file here: /usr/share/applications/antix/search-bar-icon.desktop or rather- it’s system tray icon (there’s a separate .desktop file for the Search bar itself)… or you can run the command: search-bar-icon
(you can add it to your startup file, to always have the system tray on, every time you start antiX)How does Search bar icon work?
If you run search-bar-icon a new icon (a blue eye) will appear on your system tray. Once it’s running simply select any text (just highlight it, there is no need to copy the text). Then click the eye icon on the system tray and a browser window (or tab showing) displaying a web search (by default, the search uses Startpage, that displays anonymised Google search results) will appear.
Right click the eye icon to select the search engine (it changes on the fly- it’s a great way to search for something on multiple search engines) or to quit the application. It’s like the “search” field on other OSes, but on steroids! 🙂Great, hum?
Problems:
-The application is not localized (not in pt, at least), but the only text that really needs to be localized is “Quit”
-The “Quit” button does not work on my computer…
-The application does not search on the current antiX forum, it tries to do it on the old forum…
-Nothing more!… Only the fact that this great little application needs more publicity!!!Suggestions to the Dev team:
-Make the app search on the current antiX forum
-If no text is highlighted, display a small yad window, so the user can type the search term…P.
Edit: Me being the thinkerer that I am, I noticed that this app’s GUI is a tiny yad script and redid a few things:
-Removed the non working “Search in antiX forum” option
-Removed the non working “Quit” button and replaced it with a middle click in the system tray icon, to close it
-To make the script more multi-lingual, I removed the text “Search in…” and replaced it with a kind of Magnifying glass character…
Probably tonight I’ll try to add the option to enter a search term if nothing is highligted…My adapted script:
#!/bin/bash icon=/usr/local/share/icons/search-bar/eye-icon.png default="stp" default_name="StartPage" if [ $# -eq 2 ]; then default=$1 default_name=$2 fi tip="☌ $default_name" menu="Start Page!stp --|Duck Duck Go!ddg --|Google!gg --|Wikipedia!wiki --" menu="$menu|IMDB!imdb --|Dictionary!dict-search --" menu="$menu|MX Forums!mx --" # create the notification icon exec yad --notification \ --image="$icon" \ --text="$tip" \ --menu="$menu" \ --command="$default --clipboard" &>/dev/null- This topic was modified 1 year, 1 month ago by PPC.
