::Apparently
Let’s suppose I have absolutely 0 (zero) knowledge of what Herbstluft is but I wanna try it and eventually learn it.
I’d start my computer in “Herbstluft mode” and … I’m left there alone with my own desparation.
What do I do next? Where do I find Start Menu? How do I open File Manager?
Well, I suppose, I would just press on “10 sec press for OFF” switch.
There’s no obvious reboot button I can see.
Then I’ll go to something I can use, look in Google for something as (bad as):
Afterwards, I’ll go back and give it a second chance. Maybe.
Why don’t you want to help me learning something easier and quicker? Just because AntiX is free of charge?
I also suppose, that if I already know all those Herbstluft shortcuts by heart, because I’m using it every single day since 2007, I’ll also find some way to disable that terribly disturbing “Noob Guide” insulting me from my screen all the time. 😉
There are a couple of other examples but, never mind.

::Well, these may not be the greatest sources of information in the world, and I would also suggest that herbstluftwm is not the *first place* to start on your Linux desktop educational journey, though it may be a *wonderful place* to journey once you’ve learned the basics well and you’re looking for a fast, efficient, *quirky* tool.

::Another thing: when you open any window manager, you ought to be able to type in Linux commands through an interactive shell. Many of the commands to the herbstluftwm window manager are conveniences to make the shell and other visible window instances as efficient and useful as possible.

::Apparently I understand only station here…
How can I recommend i3 after manjaro to a beginner? The developers of antiX could also set fluxbox as default Desktop…
Regarding window managers, in the early days, fluxbox was the primary window manager. A few years later, IceWM was introduced and chosen as the default, thought to be slightly simpler for those just getting started, acknowledging that fluxbox is definitely still a favorite for many, especially those who have used antiX for more than a decade.
Regarding other distributions, Manjaro is certainly an interesting distribution, currently topping the recent DistroWatch charts. I can’t speak for i3; I have never tried it. For me, [Debian, MX, and antiX] are three *PRIMARY* distributions for my very specific needs. For what it’s worth, right now I have the following distributions installed on my aging Dell Inspiron 5558:
(in no particular order):
1) Xubuntu 18.04 LTS
2) OpenSUSE Leap 15.0
3) Peppermint 9
4) Manjaro Linux 18
5) MX 17
6) Debian GNU/Linux 9
7) PCLinuxOS
8) antiX 17
9) Fedora 29Some of these distributions have the latest updates, so for instance, Debian, MX, and antiX are updated to the most current code, regardless of how the release numbers are reported in the GRUB identification strings. I can’t remember whether I’ve just used dist-upgrade or if I’ve reinstalled MX, antiX, or Debian since their most recent releases. I do know for certain that I did a RELEASE upgrade from Fedora 28 to Fedora 29 just this week, updated Manjaro from a test release of 18 to Manjaro 18, and I’ve KEPT Xubuntu at the LTS release rather than the new 18.10 release.

::Not as elegant solution as my proposal but, why not.
The first thing showing up upon start is an opened Window with links to:
1) https://herbstluftwm.org/ – the main page 2) https://herbstluftwm.org/faq.html – Frequently asked questions 3) https://herbstluftwm.org/news.html – News 4) https://herbstluftwm.org/tutorial.html – Tutorial 5) https://herbstluftwm.org/herbstluftwm.html – starting and using herbstluftwm 6) http://wiki.herbstluftwm.org/howtos – HOWTO use various herbstluftwm features 7) http://wiki.herbstluftwm.org/scripts – some scripts to take advantage of features 8) http://wiki.herbstluftwm.org/one-liners – some one line scripts to extend and utilize featuresMuch better then nothing at all and definitely some help to a new user.
We‘re coming closer to some solution.
P.S. Every distribution has or at least, should have its goal and identity. AntiX is, to my understanding, a “poor man’s Mint”, meaning: its supposed to be a beginners friendly distribution, working on old HW — so, why not make it even more beginner friendly? PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I MISUNDERSTOOD THE CONCEPT!
If it is supposed to be a “geekstribution”, then you can remove most of the things out of it and keep only ranger, mpv, moc, feh, mutt, vim, mupdf, links …

::@Bob: If the message above was for me, thanks but — no thanks. I am using Gnome3, XFCE, IceWM and i3 and I’m happy (and I can easily make my own setup).
The reason for starting this thred wasn’t, “I need help” but, “a new user needs help” and a way to improve the “Wellcome to AntiX Herbstluft” experience.
Thanks anyway!November 5, 2018 at 10:02 am #13122Forum Admin

…
antiX started as a ‘poor man’s MEPIS’ when it was first released in 2007. MEPIS was first released in early 2003, 3 years before MINT and 18 months before the first release of Ubuntu. It was/is still intended as beginner-friendly, but also lightweight. By light we also mean to fit on a cd. That was possible until post-jessie.
antiX-base was made ‘fatter’ but also will always fit on a cd. That means we have to cut corners and usually this means less ‘eye candy’.Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

The suggested post-login action, automated display of a file which lists 8 or so selected urls, that can be implemented easily, right?
I’m agree that something, anything, would be better than the statusquo blank screen. Someone accidentally logs in to that, or by curiosity, black screen is a dead end, like aw crap what do do now? reboot?November 5, 2018 at 11:15 am #13131Anonymous

Exactly my point.

::I was replying to the private message you sent the other day asking about split windows and IceWM. I didn’t have the option to post a zip file on the private message, so I posted it to this thread knowing you would see it since it was your thread.
I see you didn’t want it, so sorry for posting it here.
I saw from another post that English is not likely your native language so I will assume I misunderstood what you asked for. No worries.

I appreciate the time and effort you put into this BobC.
I will extract the files you zipped. Chances are good that there will be at least a few nuggets that I can add to my stuff, even though I have most of what I need already. Never hurts to keep extra configuration files around. There may be opportunities to share them or even incorporate them into a HOWTO. In any case, thanks! I appreciate the time and effort you’ve made.

::Brian, Yes, I hope you find something useful, too. I’ve found that there are multiple ways to split windows with IceWM. I was originally looking to change WM until I found that, and for me, a 4 way split is enough.

BobC: Thanks! I grabbed a copy of the zip file today, extracted it into an IceWM folder that includes your BobC handle, so that when I use these or send them to others, I can cite you as the person who was kind enough to share them. I appreciate it, and to me, this is what a free and open community like ours is all about.
Again, my thanks! 🙂

would be a logical starting point. That doesn’t solve the “eek, screen is all black, what did I click, oh no what do I do now?” when an unsuspecting newb launches a herbstluftwm session. Until that aspect is addressed, a more appropriate curation might be to omit herbstluftwm from the shipped slim.conf + mention on the herbstluftwm FAQ page “to enable it as a choice in the SLiM login screen, edit /etc/slim.conf and add herbstluftwm into the SESSIONS line”. -
