. . .
Manjaro did a great job with a Conky i3 manual:
. . .
Also, a user manual .pdf is included in “home” folder … if the fresh user ever comes so far.Previously, several people have recommended similar, and rokytnj1 has posted (attached file) a conky configuration containing a list of KBshortcut….Action lines.
IIRC, the suggestion “add this into the default conky” got sideswiped because
1) worrying about alienating users who have only 800×600 displays (too many conky lines to fit screen)
2) would require 3x conky conffigs, one for each WM (now moot, I think the default keybinds are now identical across all three)
3) worry about displaying hardcoded, non-localized, textMultiple conky instances can run concurrently, displayed to different x/y coordinates so they don’t overlap.
Keybind+Action info could be presented in a separate conky (and advanced users could choose to toggle it off, or nix it)
Each conky instance adds 4.5MB session RAM overhead. Does that represent an objectionable amount of “bloat”?Back In 2017(?) (for “melodie”?) I resurrected a GUI application (found on sourceforge?) which enables viewing and/or setting iceWM keybinds.
Great, could just keybind F17 or whaterver to launch that, and mention in a single conky line “Press F17 to view KBshortcuts”…
but the app either lacked a full set of localizations for its labeltext, or was English only, non-translatable. Sigh. Can’t find where I previously posted to mention, a couple apt installable applications which can serve alongside conky, painting info to the desktop (root window):
root-tail and xrootconsole
From foggy memory, one of these displays a buttugly (not antialiased) textual overlay, yet offers flexible position/size config and a transparent window background…
…and the other lacks transparency plus requires xml-marked-up content?November 16, 2018 at 12:38 am #13426Forum Admin

::Just as an FYI.
There is /was code in the session scripts run after slim to have informational pop ups on first start, a session starting notification window, and an alternate desktop pop up window to replace/ supplement the desktop desktop menu. They were all working at one point and should be configurable via a desktop-session configuration file if you would want for a snapshot. There are some bugs pointed out by a few people that need to be addressed with these options. So maybe they could be voted on again for the next release based on this thread.

::One of the main beautiful things about AntiX is you have lots desktops to use a learn from. And you can install more if you wish..
Herbstluftwm and i3 are all about MOD keys their are only two (windows key) OR (alt key) These desktops are based on VIM..cli
If you try to use a minimal desktop like this and have never used one before or tried to learn about them first it will seem harder then it really is..It is NOT that hard
Install Herbstluftwm

::Apparently I understand only station here…
How can I recommend i3 after manjaro to a beginner? The developers of antiX could also set fluxbox as default Desktop…
You can easily set what ever default desktop you wish in AntiX just by editing a file.
etc/slim.conf# Available sessions (first one is the default).
# The current chosen session name is replaced in the login_cmd
# above, so your login command can handle different sessions.
# see the xinitrc.sample file shipped with slim sources
sessions rox-fluxbox,space-fluxbox,fluxbox,herbstluftwm,i3,i3_with_debug_log_,rox-icewm,space-icewm,icewm,rox-jwm,space-jwm,jwmAnd in the same file. = Are over typing your user name & password every time you log in to your desktop with slim.
Then do this for password only..`
# Focus the password field on start when #default_user is set
# Set to “yes” to enable this feature
focus_password yes# Automatically login the default user (without entering
# the password. Set to “yes” to enable this feature
#auto_login yes# default user, leave blank or remove this line
# for avoid pre-loading the username.
default_user kooAlso have a look in your home folder .desktop-session folder lots of .conf to play with here. Just backup the folder first Just in case of an opps..
I would always recommend i3 to new users…

I have used manjaro i3 myself very nice indeed. But I would install i3 from debian buster server onto AntiX anytime over using manjaro as their kernel updates can be pretty unstable at times.
Who ever builds the kernels for AntiX you are my Stable Hero.- This reply was modified 4 years, 5 months ago by ex_Koo.

(Just found an easier way.
/home/you/.desktop-session/default-desktop = change to fluxbox reboot fluxbox is now your default..)You can easily change your default log in desktop yourself. etc/slim.conf

::As I read it, missTell only mentioned i3 to point to examples of fine documentation (wasn’t suggesting it as an addition to antiX).

All this thread was about, has been my suggestion to provide some kind of assistance for absolute beginners who land into the Herstluft and get lost. A couple of most important shortcuts, visible all the time would be a welcome help.
I brought Manjaro as an example because of the very elegant way how they solved the problem — but, it doesn’t have to be a Conky solution. Even a simple default wallpaper, like on the image below, would be a great help.
