First if we need java, many users do.

      libreoffice7.4/program/javavendors.xml
does not list debian java. After some frustrating experiments I downloaded Oracle java
and placed it in /opt/jre1.8.0_331. I was unable to get the distro LO to accept the jre.

      Having had this issue before:

I purged Libreoffice then downloaded and installed LO and language packs from
Libreoffice org. This installs to /opt

Located soffice.rc then set CrashDumpEnable=false and Logo=0. latter setting stops the splash
      screen from slowing start.

Setup starters in my ICEWM toolbar with –norestore option. This allows me to consistently
start with a pre given window size. Libreoffice remembers window size and position which is
      not always what I want.

Started writer then went to extras options extended and set my java runtime without issue.

Next issue, LO insisted on document format US Letter. So off to /etc/papersize and set a4

Depending on location and need for exact layout a default document template may be needed.
It is in many cases most convenient for things like business letters.

Set the printer to default a4. Meant I needed to set the cups default so went to
localhost:631 and set both of my printers to default papersize of a4.

/etc/papersize is a global setting. Most (all?) applications should also read the value of the variable “$PAPERSIZE”. You can also change the value of the variable “$PAPERCONF” to read a file other than /etc/papersize.

Following may also be of help as belt and braces approach. You may need to prefix with sudo.

      $export PAPERSIZE=”a4″

or to change the file $PAPERCONF uses

      $export PAPERCONF=”$HOME/.papersize”

For single jobs it is easy enough to override, important as my MFC can go to A3 for posters
      and presentations.

Highly recommend to Install Language Tool Extension. Note: Requires Java 8.
      First download LanguageTool-stable.oxt from https://languagetool.org/

Open writer extras options advanced and check that java is correctly setup.

Open extras extension manager strg+alt+e use add extension, navigate to your downloaded oxt file and
      install it.

Main Supported Languages English, German Spanish, Portuguese, LanguageTool.org claims checks are effective
      in 20 plus languages.

        “/etc/papersize and set a4”

That was really useful! Thank you!
