SimpleScan likes to ask me to up and install Epson’s software in order to make use of it.
This is fine, but when I do gdebi up their package (picked a Debian 9 version (a Debian 10
version is available) from http://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php )
it is gung-ho to uninstall eudev and install udev.
Which after fear is the mind-killer for antiX in builds so far. What kind of workaround should I be attempting, if any? There are directories core/ and plugins/
with .deb files, and if they didn’t have scripts that wanted to remove eudev things might be all
golden. Just…unzip…nope…tar -xvf them and send them round? Anyone care to wise up that idea?
ETA: Thanks, lol. So it’s already here as imagescan. Now I just wonder about…sparing
a scanner or MFP on the supported list to see if that works despite no udev tagging or proudly
exclaimed localnet (192.168.MostOfIt?Yup) scan daemon…ET is the EcoTank series…ETA: At least for Epson, there …was (antiX17) the option of editing the file for simplescan to
not have epson commented out. Then it scans, but with no options, cropping, color adjustment, care.
It seems I have imagescan now, and that editing /etc/imagescan/imagescan.conf will let me enter
things from …say, dmesg | tail if I just plugged in the scanner. And is made by Epson.
And has suggestions for usb combos in /etc/imagescan/combo.conf and an ‘Utsushi’ docs handle
such that https://github.com/utsushi/utsushi (archived, but commits as late as 2018 are in there)
would perhaps relate info. I just need to trade Clash Ragebutt emeralds and gold for f***s.
And maybe antiX-src repo clues, since this is here with no udev (which I would expect it to
relate to sane with, but then I have imagemagick installed, so off to there…and ew, another
magic if at all.- This topic was modified 3 years, 1 month ago by Hypercorporealism0000000.

::Ah, someone else with scanner issues. 🙂 My situation is kind of a drag also, because I need scanimage 28 to be able to use the scanner that comes with my Canon all-in-one, but even Sid stops right now at 27. I’ve tried uninstalling AntiX’s sane, and replacing it with the latest version, but that’s death for my AntiX installation, at least if I ever want to reinstall the packaged version. Now that you’ve mentioned eudev vs. udev, I remember that distinctly being an issue.
While I don’t have a solution to your problem, I just wanted to throw in my two cents. You can always check to see whether the latest sane supports your device… then you’ll at least know you have a path to victory.
So, I take this opportunity to make a request to the AntiX devs: any way we can package the latest sane-backends (I think it’s at 29 now!) for AntiX? I’ve seen this trick done before with JWM, so maybe we can make it work for AntiX.
If not, I suppose I can wait until it washes upon the shores of the stable release, but still, it’d be awesome. Just bounce it around, willya? 🙂 🙂

::For packages from an OEM source you could probably unpack the deb file with dpkg -x and dpkg -e and review the files to see what may or may not work in place of the specified items in the control file. Using the above you may find that you could unpack the file, edit the control file to allow eudev instead of udev, repack the deb file and find it to work as expected.
This extra work unfortunately comes along with not following the vast majority. I have found brother brand printers to be quite friendly by instead offering an installation script. However on the same token it makes it a little less than optimal for system maintenance later on.

::Have you tried running simple scan as sudo. I have a Canon LIDE 120 scanner will only work as sudo with antiX.

::I have epson scanners , too. What worked for me:
After extracting the downloaded imagescan-bundle-debian-10-3.62.0.x64.deb.tar.gz from epson side,
i clicked on the imagescan-bundle-debian-10-3.62.0.x64.deb folder.
inside is a core-folder, inside that is a debian-binary-package : imagescan_3.62.0-1epson4debian10_amd64.debBeing in the direction of that binary package I could install it with
sudo apt install ./imagescan_3.62.0-1epson4debian10_amd64.debNo complaining about eudev or udev.As intended, eudev is used instead of udev.
Then you can go to the plugins-folder and install the binary-packages for the plugins the same way. That should work for you. Be carefull and don’t use the install.sh. It will break the system and remove 65 packages.

::I have been trying various Linux based scan software with my HP 7410 MFP, including Simple Scan, X-Sane, etc. From my testing the only scan software that worked (sort of) for me was gscan2pdf. Interface still crude (typical) but working in principle correctly with multi-page ADF documents, and not as amateurish as SimpleScan.
Just for level base, my scanner was network connected, not USB, using SANE.
SANE protocol seems a good potential but I would like to see mature scan software in Linux world…Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::Thanks for the tip, Xecure – this looks exactly like what I’d want. However, I’d like to enable this as a repo, but I get a complaint that it isn’t secure because
it doesn’t have a Release file. I add this line to my /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list (really, just guessing at the syntax:)deb http://la.mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/pool/test/s/sane-backends/ testing main nonfree

I could always go through installing each .deb file individually (wouldn’t be that hard, I guess), but they’d have to be installed in a specific order, right? (In the JWM example I gave in my first post, that was only one .deb file, IIRC.)

::>I would like to see mature scanner software in the Linux world.
I do not think I understand these examples where Linux scanning capability has been successfully utilized in mostly scientific scenarios.
I was referring to typical, real-life need: Attaching a typical scanner to your home network (or USB if not network capable) you typically need to scan a multi-page document into PDF (or another) format. Looking for free Linux (running under antiX this time) scanning software there seems to have been a few choices such as SimpleScan, gScan2PDF and X-Sane. In practical use (and not to prove scientific capability) none except gScan2PDF was able to perform this simple task, still with crude (typical for Linux software) interface but worked (and in some way better than a corresponding Windows software).
Yes, some can probably prove to me this simple scanning task can be accomplished using SimpleScan or other free Linux software but in all practicality of my testing only gScan2PDF worked under antiX and only on some laptops, which did not inspire confidence of universal reliability. Therefore in all practicality all such examples of scientific implementations do not help real life and typical need…
Granted, a solid reliability was not experienced in Windows based software either, in cases when scanner was connected to network rather than directly to USB…Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::latest sane-backends debs available in repos for testing.
You need to edit antix.list in /etc/apt/sources.list.d and temporarily add dev so it looks something like thisdeb http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/mx/antix/buster/ buster main nonfree nosystemd devsudo apt update && sudo apt install sane sane-utilsPlease let us know if this new set of debs work.

::Following anticapitalista’s instructions, it worked – with one minor addition. I had to add ‘libsane’ to the list of packages to install; because, following the given instructions verbatim, I was getting
$ scanimage –version
scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.29; backend version 1.0.27and still simple-scan wasn’t detecting my scanner. After installing libsane, I got
$ scanimage –version
scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.29; backend version 1.0.29and was then able to scan from simple-scan. Nice!
