      Hello, all you geniuses!

Unfortunately did yesterdays (28/11) update through Synaptic result in
all sound disappearing from my laptop, a 64-bit hp with 8 MB RAM, using antiX 19 base.

      Any suggestion?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hi, not a genius but it would be helpful if you post the ‘/var/log/apt/history.log’ (or an older version with packages that were updated).
Did you try to run alsamixer to check whether the channels are not muted?
        Do you use pulseaudio/pavucontrol?

Also, it is not entirely clear whether you run stable/testing/sid (though I assume the first is correct), could you post ‘inxi -Fzr’.

Not a genius too, but to add to the above, did you look if there’s still the right soundcard chosen in
          control-centre > hardware > Sound card selection

The soundcard is set to Generic and it claims to be able to connect to the card.
There is no sound when testing, though. Neither when using any other program, such as e.g. SMPlayer.
Using the only other option, it says not being able to connect to the soundcard. No sound, of course.

Channels are not muted in Alsamixer.

Again, thank you very much in advance for the help!

This is wrong. Though it shouldn’t effect sound.

and so is this. It should be disabled (it is by default).
This is probably what has caused your sound issue.

              deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org/ buster non-free main

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

The deb-multimedia.org repos is enabled. This is not recommended at all.It is not safe to use and is only made available for installing some restricted codecs. It’s possible your sound problems are related to that.
If you go to synaptic and click on the left side on origin, source and then on “Local/main (www.deb.multimedia.org)”
you can see which packages are installed from this repo.It should not be more than
                deb-multimedia-keyring
                libdvdcss2
                libtxc-dxtn0
Please disable this repos in your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list unless you love to fight with troubles that sooner or later likely appear.

Ups, my answer took a loong time, apperently.
