Sound not saving settings

Hi all,
I installed fresh antiX 21 full version for the first time. Worked like a charm.
This is an Eee PC 1001PX system with 2 GB RAM and an 256 GB SSD.
I planed to give this one to my son.

As has been written many times, sound gives problems.
That is the Intel-HDA aka Realtek ALC269VB according to AlsaMixer 1.2.4

I even opened the netbook to check the speaker cable is attached properly, since I installed the SSD, I thought I might have detached it by accident. This is not the case.
However, this version of the ASUS Eee PC has only one speaker.

I have read many pages in various forums and sites at no avail.
Here is what I find upon boot und opening AlsaMixer:

First I select sound settings and then the Audio device with “F6” and choose the HDA Intel device
next page shows

01 Master
02 Headphone
03 Headphone
04 Headphone
05 Speaker
06 PCM
07 Auto-Mute
08 Internal
09 Loopback
10 Pre-Amp

No. “2 Headphone” is set to mute

By selecting this tab (right arrow) and pressing “m”, I unmute it.
With arrow up, I increase the volume to max.

# 7 Auto-Mute and #9 Loopback are set to disabled. Except #3 (Headphone) everything else is set to max.

Checking by initiating sound test right away in the control center, I hear the voices left, right etc…
I close AlsaMixer by pressing “ESC”

This works for a couple seconds, an then it resets itself for Headphone #2 to mute. So no sound again.
Reopening AlsaMixer and doing the same procedure gives the same result for another couple seconds.

I am not sure why the settings show 3 x Headphones, the Speaker in addition and those internal devices in the first place.
I am also not sure why #2 Headphone setting relates physically to the internal speaker.

However, I found no way to save the once set and working settings in AlsaMixer in a way, that it stays permanent.
I might oversee something.

I appreciate anyone who could give a clue or what to look for to get this solved.

Well, my advice does not point exactly to how to solve problems with alsamixer- have you tried installing PulseAudio (available in the Package Installer) and see if that solves your audio problems? In my case, in antiX 21, it works great-

Hi PPC,

thanks for the hint. I attach screenshhots. From my understanding, Pulseaudio came pereinstalled. I used the tools in the control panel of antiX.

So this is either not antiX or pulseaudio was installed here.Then its the best to also install pavucontrol and make your settings there.

Hi caprea,

pavucontrol was preinstalled.
I opened it and can set the volume of “Speaker” with no effect.

As far as I know no official antiX version comes with Pulseaudio (and pavucontrol) preinstalled… so either you or someone else installed those packages in your system, or you are not using a stock antiX version.
To make sure pulse audio is running try this:
-Open the terminal and run this command (and don’t close the terminal):
pulseaudio

-Try to play audio and launch pavucontrol and check if sound is enabled there (check if it’s enabled for the application playing audio too, to be on the safe side).

Side note- this week end, out of the blue- while watching video using a web browser, on antiX 19.X, I lost sound completely- I rebooted, still no audio. I checked and antiX was forcing the soundboard that is in-build to the motherboard (that is not working) as default sound playing device – I reset it to the correct sound board, it worked, but, after some time, I lost sound again. Having pulseaudio running always enables sound for me- fixing this problem.
Sometimes, sound in Linux is just weird like that…

So you even have both installed pulseaudio and pipewire as soundservers.The question is where do you want to go ?
For using pulseaudio I would recommend to deinstall pipewire again.Together they will not harmonize.

Also it is recommended to install pavucontrol.
The pulseaudio daemon needs to be started on antiX with
pulseaudio -D &

Afterwards open pavucontrol for your settings.

If this works for you you can make it autostart
control-centre > session > User Desktop-Session
Outcomment the line in the startup file like this

## Uncomment if using pulseaudio (you need to install it). Make sure it starts before volumeicon.
pulseaudio -D &

First off, thank you everyone for trying to help. Highly appreciated.

Since this was started as a fresh install, all I did in addition was testing some of the WM and installed “Primary” for kids.
Maybe, one of those installations came with Pulseaudio or PipeWire or it was my fault at some point, but I am not aware to have installed any of these (Pulseaudio or PipeWire) on purpose.
PipeWire does not even show up in the packages list.

However, I tested with the installation USB live system and found fewer entries in the AlsaMixer. Also, Pulseaudio was missing and it showed INTEL-HD as the only device.
I pushed the slider for headphone up an heard the test sounds. Upon closing it kept the settings.
I made that changes permanent for the USB Boot-Device.

Booting again from the SSD I deinstalled Pulseaudio, restarted, and tried again.
After setting the AlsaMixer again I have sound, but it is distorted now.
Unlike the situation with the live USB.
I rechecked with that USB configuration, which gives clear sound.

So, I decided to reinstall from scratch on the SSD, install nothing in addition and see if this helps.

I will post an update after I reinstalled.

Reinstalled with the USB Boot device and the saved settings.

Sound works now undistorted.

I will figure a way to backup the whole system, before I install any additional software or change any settings. Lesson learned!
