Ok, I kicked 4.10 header and image, updated grub, reboot et voila!
4.9.75 is now on default. 🙂

I noticed 2 different 4.14.12 kernels in the “Package Installer”.

Kernel-antix 64bit latest 4.14.12

Kernel-antix_libre_64bit_latest 4.14.12

What be the difference.

I installed the Kernel-antix 64bit latest 4.14.12

I also removed my 4.10.5 kernel using Synaptic didn’t see no reason keeping an older not used kernel around.

libre kernels are defined as free by gnu. Free not in beer, but in libre/freedom. what that means, practically, is that hardare devices that are deemed ‘un-free’ will not work.

Just to point out that kernel upgrades will be on going for quite a while as fixes, regressions are sorted out. Don’t blame the kernel team(s), but the hardware manufacturers that seem to be doing very little to fix THEIR balls-up.

antiX-13, 13.1, 13.2 users should install the patched Debian kernel in the wheezy repos, version 3.2 eg linux-image-3.2.0-5-486, linux-image-3.2.0-5-686-pae and linux-image-3.2.0-5-amd64 (don’t forget to install the headers too).

4.9.75 kernels available in the jessie antiX repos (antiX-16).
Users should try this kernel and headers first.

There is a 4.4.109 set of kernels as well.
These were built from Ubuntu sources.
They *might* work ok for some of you.

I am running antiX 17 on a Dell latitude D610.
It currently has linux-image 4.10.5-antix 1-486-smp and linux-headers 4.10.5-antix 1-486-smp installed.
Are you suggesting that it is better to use the 4.9.75 in the Synaptic Package Manager rather than the 4.9 in the Package Installer for antiX 17?

No, not any more. antiX libre kernels are available in the repos though.

I’ll probably drop building antiX libre kernels, too much work …

I am back with my patched antix 16, now running on:

Desktop: IceWM 1.3.8
Distro: antiX-16.1_386-full Berta Cáceres 16 January 2017

My machine: Acer Extensa 5220, maxed out on CPU, RAM and SSD,
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz
4 GB RAM DDR2 667Mhz
256 GB SSD
Graphics Card: Intel Mobile GM965/GL960

Works! 🙂

Anyway, I _cannot_ recommend to install kernel 4.9.75.antix.2 on antix 16.
Holy cow, the boot process takes ages! Around 45 seconds until login screen. 🙁
And there are some other (minor) issues, rox filer does not work properly and all in all the system is heavily slow! No joy! 🙁

With kernel 4.4.109-antix.1-486-smp i686 boot time to login screen is around 4 seconds! 😀
And the whole system is fast! Even grumpy firefox esr works like a charm. 🙂

Thanks to anti and team for providing new kernels.

When the kernel devs are relatively satisfied that all/most of spectre and meltdown has been dealt with. At the moment they are not, and nor am I.

I have updated to the 4.9.75.

On this Ryzen hardware 4.10.5-antix was absolutely stable (more than 41 days uptime).
So far 3 days + on the 4.9.75.

I think it is good. Which brings me to my next point, these are both antix kernels. In MX, only the 4.10 antix was stable. I don’t know if there are differences in the kernels down deep, or what patches have been applied. Here in antix 17, I down loaded a few kernels and installed them.

4.9.75 antix.2 -posting from antix17 now
4.10.5 -antix -old antix and MX kernel (was stable >41 days cumulative)
4.13.14-antix -boots normally in antix 17, but I believe is not meltdown/spectre patched
4.14.12-antix -boots to a black terminal, I can log in, but start X fails, it cant find a server. So I am assuming that the nvidia building did not work properly, yet it obviously worked well on the 4.13.14-antix.

Is there a way to get the nvidia driver installed into that 4.14.12 which is believe is spectre/meltdwon patched?
