      @Wallon: I’m sorry to hear that your nation is relatively underdeveloped as it pertains to networking capability.

      Yes, the USA is fairly well-developed. Long ago, in part, due to concerns and worries about wars and conflicts, the military, in cooperation with educational institutions, government, and business (which is often rare, even in a place like ours), the network technologies that we take for granted were first created. For a decade or two, we had an advantage of this technology, then it was shared freely.

      Perhaps 10-20 years ago, many nations either caught up or exceeded our overall national capability, and then concern arose once again, so technologies, coupled with a relatively strong overall economy, led to further expansion. Then the mobile technology took hold. This led to a further need. With business, education, and personal usage expanding exponentially, there was renewed interest.

      I’m not sure where the USA stands in the “network speed race” today, but where I live, we certainly have pretty decent speeds, whether they are 4G LTE, 5G, or some kind of Wifi technologies; all of them have been “beefed up” (greatly increased) in order to satisfy the insatiable appetite for entertainment, information, and overall voice and data networking.

      Hopefully yours will be expanding soon too; I greatly enjoy and embrace communicating with people from all over the world. I wish you and everyone the very best in every aspect of our lives.

        I don’t understand why on a Live antiX 21 full USB stick, the speedtest with Google Chrome is excellent on a wired connection.
        As soon as I do a fresh installation, the speedtest with Google Chrome is bad on wired connection.
        Is there a change in the software that handles the internet between the installation ISO and an upgrade after installing antiX?

        Thank you @Wallon for reporting your experience and benchmarks. To me personally as user this is a significant information to be aware of.
        I do not have any ideas why antiX traditionally installed has such bad download speeds vs. antiX Live, which has excellent download speeds. The reason I have not experienced such issues is that all my installations of antiX 21 are Live, whether run from USB sticks or installed as Live on internal SATA disks, on many my laptops, two of them directly connected via gigabit network cable.

        Although my post does not contribute anything to solution I think your discovery should attract great interest on the part of antiX developers, as you narrowed down the problem area to traditional install of antiX rather than antiX architecture itself, considering antiX Live does not exhibit this issue.
        Thanks and Regards…

          I do not see any issues regarding download speeds running antiX-21 installed (64bit) whether testing firefox-esr or google-chrome.

          So far only @Wallon has reported this issue.

          If other antiX-21 users can confirm one way or another, then we can take a look.

          antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

              Edit: I cannot reproduce this result after trying this test again after about 24 hrs. So I am deleting my comments earlier.

              I installed FT10 again and ran the speedtest again. The curve is flat and good.

              Sorry @Wallon, I tried to reproduce your result, but I cannot.

                I won’t post speedtest screen shots with my upload speeds at .52 and dowload at 4 mbps.

                My internet provider is at fault. Not antiX, Not chrome-Browser, or Firefox browser.

                I have both browsers installed on my 64 bit computers.

                The wife gets the same speeds I get on her Windows 11 gear also after I had her check on speedtest.

                  Dear All,

                  I don’t know what to do but here is the proof that my computer works very well with MX Linux 19.4 FULL which is also installed on a disk (not in Live, not in frugal, not in persistence…).
                  My internet provider is also very good. There is no variation during the day.
                  We are 3 people surfing at the moment at home and the speedtest is still excellent with Google Chrome.
                  Yet this Google Chrome has the “UBlockOrigin” extension activated + synchronized with my account + hundreds of shortcuts to Linux and others…
                  So there is something that “brakes” antiX with a traditional installation on disk or other USB 3.1 keys.
                  You can find the full info of MX Linux 19.4 FULL to make a comparison with antiX 21 FULL.

                  @calciumsodium – I did a fresh install without FT10-transformation of antiX 21 Full on a good SanDisk USB 3.1 stick (150 MB/s read).

                  When I use a simple USB 2.0 stick (no name) with antiX 21 Full LIVE, the speedtest with Google Chrome is excellent.

                  All my tests are done with a wired connection for internet access.

                  Best regards,
                  Wallon

                  I can’t put the full info of MX Linux. The forum says it’s spam.

                      @Wallon, the kernel is a different one, live or installed. Live is 4.9, installed is 5.xxx

                          Dear caprea,

                          With MX Linux 19.4 Full, I use this kernel

                          $ uname -a
                          Linux MSI 5.10.0-14mx-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.113-1~mx19+1 (2022-05-03) x86_64 GNU/Linux

                          The kernel 5.10 is not a problem for my desktop because the speedtest with Google Chrome in MX Linux is excellent.

                          I also tested several environments;
                          fluxbox
                          rox icewm
                          zzz icewm

                          It does not change anything. The speedtest is still bad.

                          I did a fresh installation in English (US) on another Sandisk USB 3.2 stick. It doesn’t change anything, the speedtest is still bad.

                          I don’t understand where this comes from.

                          I’m trying to get the detail a second time from MX Linux 19.4 FULL

                            First, you might want to try a different speed test, my fav. is dslrpts.com, which will also show you buffer-bloat and packet-retransmit rates. Note though that lately, they seem to have trouble keeping enough servers online. Then, compare your antiX and MX install’s which driver’s being used for your ethernet card. If same, check for any different driver-specific parameters set in or drivers blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/ files. Then diff the outputs of “sysctl -a” and “lsmod | sort”, and /proc/cmdline between the two Linux installs. You could all try a few runs of “ping 8.8.8.8” on both installs and between your (working) “live” install vs your hard-disk install and compare results looking for differences. Beyond that, I can’t think of much else. I wish you the best of luck!

                              Dear Developers,

                              I found that the antiX 19 Full version on my old Asus laptop from 2008 also had a problem after the updates for the fr_BE version.
                              Everything was slow, even moving through the menus with the arrow pad.
                              Google Chrome which always worked well with antiX 19 Full was slow and the download became very bad for the antiX fr_BE version.
                              I asked for a full info to check if there was a change in my settings.
                              I found that I had lost the settings for swappiness (by default = 60) and cache_pressure (by default = 100 or 60, sorry, I don’t remember).
                              So I modified the /etc/sysctl.conf file
                              I added these two lines at the end of the file (in root mode);
                              vm.swappiness = 10
                              vm.vfs_cache_pressure = 50

                              On an old copy of sysctl.confOldBackup, there was a third line which I also tested;
                              vm.dirty_bytes = 20000000
                              I discovered that this line has a very bad impact on Google Chrome. The download is really bad in Google Chrome.
                              You have to delete this line or put it as a comment by adding the # sign in front of the line like this;
                              #vm.dirty_bytes = 20000000

                              This could also be the explanation for the bad speedtest (especially for the download) for antiX 21. I don’t have antiX 21 installed anymore to check.

                              So, there was an update that modified my “sysctl.conf” file and Google Chrome works fine now on the antiX 19 Full version.

                              Look at my screenshot with Google Chrome for my old laptop with a 2GB ram. My contract with my internet provider is download 125 mbps and upload 6,5 mbps.
                              It’s beautiful isn’t it?

                              Best regards,
                              Wallon

                                Dear Developers,

                                I installed antiX 21 Full on a Sandisk 3.2 usb stick on my old 2008 Asus laptop with 2 GB ram.

                                I removed the line vm.dirty_bytes by putting the # sign in front of it.
                                #vm.dirty_bytes = 20000000

                                Now, Google Chrome also works very well for downloading in antiX 21. Look at my screenshot. I have a nice straight line for my 125 mbps download.

                                I’m going to tell you a secret.
                                I installed several Linux distributions and checked why other distributions worked well with Google Chrome download. Every time, the dirty_bytes was 0.
                                I don’t understand all these functions but it has a nasty influence on the speed of antiX.
                                As I have no answer from the developers, I stop testing.

                                I’m happy to have found the cause of the slowness of Google Chrome on my 2 computers.

                                I’m also glad I’m back to antiX because the Debian distribution free or not free is very difficult to use. You always have to get out command lines and it doesn’t even always work. I understand the work that is done by the developers to help ordinary users.

                                Best regards,
                                Wallon

                                  Hi,

                                  I believe my speed is consistent with what my ISP delivers and my sysctl.conf file also has the dirty_bytes = 20000000 (and the two other settings mentioned with the same values [10 and 50]) as a default.

                                  However, I use firefox, not google chrome, on this machine.

                                  So, possibly this setting is harmless for not chrome browsers (or only a problem with chrome browsers on certain setups, since anticapitalista mentioned that he had no problems with speed with google-chrome, presumably with the same dirty_bytes setting?).
