::Hello,
The old 4.14 kernel try was just to know if the K4.14 is OK into his old PC (It is just a test to see).
Of course this old kernel 4.14.13 is old (today it is 4.14.267) but 4.14 is not EOL and will be updated until Jan, 2024. So it is possible to compile this kernel by himself if he wants at the latest subversion.https://www.kernel.org/releases.html
Longterm release kernels Version Maintainer Released Projected EOL
5.15 Greg Kroah-Hartman & Sasha Levin 2021-10-31 Oct, 2023
5.10 Greg Kroah-Hartman & Sasha Levin 2020-12-13 Dec, 2026
5.4 Greg Kroah-Hartman & Sasha Levin 2019-11-24 Dec, 2025
4.19 Greg Kroah-Hartman & Sasha Levin 2018-10-22 Dec, 2024
4.14 Greg Kroah-Hartman & Sasha Levin 2017-11-12 Jan, 2024
4.9 Greg Kroah-Hartman & Sasha Levin 2016-12-11 Jan, 20234.4 Already EOL (the last one is: 4.4.302 )
The reason I keep bringing this back up is that this list is the “official Linux kernel” list, but it’s not the antiX kernel list. If anyone wants to use these, of course they are welcome to do so.
I keep reiterating, however, that these are not antiX kernels, so if people want to use them, that’s fine; however, the responsibility for managing them is up to those who use them.As long as this is clearly understood, the next question is whether there is anything else to discuss here before we mark this thread SOLVED?

I really don’t understand what does it mean to mark as “SOLVED” a thread about the EOL of a kernel. I understand that the recommendation is to stick with the 4.4 kernel. No objection. But I haven’t understood everything. There are things I would like to ask, but I’m not ready to do it now. I hope that marking the thread as “SOLVED” doesn’t mean that I won’t have the chance to ask later.

::When we mark a thread as solved, it means that the topic under discussion has been solved, “resolved”.
Since the topic thread is 4.4 kernel has reached EOL, I think that has been discussed and repeated.If there are questions, I think it is appropriate to open a specific thread, select a topic name that is a brief description of the question, and we’ll discuss it.
Also it’s probably best to have a specific thread topic for each question; then when the question is answered we can mark one solved and ask another question in another thread.
In this way, we won’t get sidetracked; we’ll try to make sure that each specific question is answered.
Unfortunately when we digress into other matters the original topic gets obscurred, and that’s why I want to close out this discussion now.Please ask questions. You can put them in the New Users –> Questions category. Thanks!

::Just so everyone knows, I split this into another topic once we started to talk about other kernels.
I also moved this topic into the New Users —> Questions forum section. These are not announcements, these
are questions and discussions about the various Version 4 kernels that are outside the scope of the antiX kernels.I’m marking both this and the original 4.4 End of Life kernel announcement SOLVED.

::Sorry to drop in after this was already solved, however –
Jason Self, a maintainer of the Linux Libre kernel on many architectures and for many versions, has offered to make .deb packages of all the SLTS kernels available on his repo, IF there was some interest in using them. This would include 4.4 and going forward. His repo is super easy to add to antiX, and his kernel packages work real well in my couple years of experience. Only thing is that it IS Linux Lbre, meaning no non-free blobs, no non-free kernel modules, no non-free CPU microcode updates, etc. I see those things as a positive, but not everyone is going to agree with my pro-Libre software viewpoint.
If anyone is interested just respond and let me know. I told him I’d get back to him soon about it. His website is jxself.org.

::Sorry if my questions caused diversion & distraction from the issue. I’ll create a specific thread topic for each of my remaining questions. Many thanks to all of you for your answers. Your help is always invaluable.

::No big deal. I simply want to keep the forum as usable as we can for people who visit, looking for potential answers to their questions.
If the topics and discussion matches a reader will have an easier time finding what they’re looking for. We can do better in this regard.
Please keep asking questions; we can always modify the topic names and locations until they make sense and are well organized, but if everyone does their best, we’ll improve our organization and content easier and sooner. Don’t be afraid to ask; I’d still rather move stuff and edit, as opposed to discouraging people who have questions or need assistance.

::Yeah, thank you!
I definitely do NOT want to scare anyone away, insist on perfect organization or anything else that screams “Control freak!” by any means. I’m only seeking to organize our discussion so all of us can easily locate the information we are seeking.
I appreciate your affirmation and encouragement. I hope we’re helping out with the discussion and the forum organization.
Best wishes for everyone!

I noticed your equipment. I used the D600 series many times and at one point I owned a D600 myself, used D600-D630 at various work assignments and I gave my system to my son.
Good laptops!
