Hoping this tip will help someone, I had some grief with missing volume problems until the penny dropped!

With very fast hardware and a bios that offers a staggered or sequential hard disk spin-up, you may find as I did the boot process overtakes the spin-up of disks before /dev is fully populated, and it does not wait long enough, so the boot process completes without one or more hard disks being included, and the volumes they contain will not be visible nor available, nor subsequently made available as the /dev/sdxx file will be absent.

Disk Manager cannot see them but you may get messages as it loads inviting you to delete certain hardware unit names, and suggesting you do so – don’t!

The answer is to moderate the use of sequential spin-up which I cannot see any real reason for unless the power supply wattage is borderline. A reboot after entry into the bios maintenance to disable sequential spin-up and save the bios options will cause the hardware to be correctly recognised once more.
