To be honest, there are probably better suited distros than antiX for gaming.

This might be a useful thread to read: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/gaming-on-antix-recommendations/

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I updated the post linked by anticapitalista, NVIDIA Drivers are at
present behaving nicely on my SID install. Tesla 470 is what my now
deprecated card needs. Have no idea how well latest video cards are
supported. Here in DE they are still riculously expensive.

I would give steam a try, as far as I am aware it ran well on antiX21.
Was used to annoy wondozers by some kids who liked it as it ran faster
and was usable on not so modern hardware.

I am not up to date on above as kids are now students and group is
            pretty well broken.

If there are issues due systemD or possibly audio MX is also worth
            testing.

                  Hello Batman123.

Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original Brazilian Portuguese text directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
                  How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You won’t waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings.

I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzzFM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.

Whenever you need to ask for help or technical support in this forum, please explain in detail what is happening, don’t mince words, be thorough when writing, tell your computer characteristics such as make and model. If possible, post the result of the command $ inxi -Fxz from the terminal, copy and paste here in the message of the topic that you are going to create in this forum.

When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”, by checking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are replies from topic in question.

I would like to if antix can be used for gaming by using steam and wine lutris.

Regarding your question, I have successfully tested several games from Steam, with Wine or PlayOnLinux and free games from GOG.com.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
                  How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

Hi Batman123- let me clear some extra subjects:
Probably anticapitalista suggested that you could use other distros because usually games require the latest hardware and drivers, to run or run at the desired speed- theoretically, antiX, that uses so little system resources, should make more system resources available to the game, making it run faster… but, in reality, you can have a system that is so new that antiX does not included the ideal Kernel/drivers for it, etc (remember- antiX is aimed at making old hardware usable, not at offering the latest versions of everything…).
That said, I used the Heroic games launcher on my pretty old PC (a 4GB of RAM quad core desktop) and it runs fine some windows games (one had some bugs just as I was finishing it… months ago)- even on old hardware, and running games meant for another operating system, I can say they run in antiX just like they are native…
Like Marcelo suggested- some emulators allow users to run games meant for gaming consoles (I played some of my old PS2 games on my desktop- I had to figure out how to slow down the emulator, because they run too fast 🙂 )-
There are some native ports of AAA games for Linux too.
One tip: there’s a port of the OS the Steam portable console runs, that you can install in a computer- it probably is the best way to have a great user experience running steam games…

                      P.

                        hi Batman*
Radeon 5550XT 4GB was middle class in 2019, will work well if you do not expect miracles.
Radeon cards are better supported in linux than NVidia, and not so easy to find second hand.

Regarding steam and Lutris, I would setup antiX install and update to use debian sid repos, sid as
you will be better off with freshest application versions. Plenty of howtos on upgrade to sid here
                        in forum.

Only way to know if things will work the way you wish is try and see.

But! there is a major Perl transition in progress, I updated without issue today including Perl
base which apt held for a couple of days. Whether tomorrows updates are safe might be another story.

You might also want to use a more recent kernel than antiX provides although if your hardware is as
old as the video card you are unlikely to need to do so.

Are you referring to this: https://github.com/theVakhovskeIsTaken/holoiso ?

I gave this a try last weekend on an AMD/Radeon laptop. Didn’t go well for me. Fans ran full blast, laptop got hotter and hotter, and the installer was in an infinite loop. However, I only gave it a couple install attempts and about three or four hours before deciding to give the project more time to mature. It was buggy on my hardware but may be fine with someone else’s hardware.

My take away was it’s a project with rough edges and will improve in time. It has potential and not recommending against giving it a try.
