Hello, i recently installed antix 21. I liked its rox-icewm desktop. But i wanted to try others, so i installed cinnamon and gnome from the software center. I switched to cinnamon and then switched to gnome. But now, it wont switch back to the other ones.
I tried going to other desktops > and selecting any of the other desktops from the list but it wont switch back.I also tried to restart and at the login screen i clicked the gear icon at the bottom right and tried selecting any of the other desktops from the list, but it wont login if i select any of the other desktops . it logs in only when i select gnome desktop.
Should i uninstall gnome desktop. How can i do that safely ?

::Hi silverrahul.
after making so many changes, major desktops pull in many depends
the sanest way to get back to a normal antiX installation is to reinstall from your
personal backup or ISO image. When you want to try out anything which makes major changes to your system may I
recommend to use a live USB stick. It makes reverting really easy. Just rewrite
from your personal backup or a sha256 checked download. You can also make a USB Live stick start without setting up persistence, as long as
you have sufficient RAM and swap memory available, fully update, make changes,
experiments and at any time reboot without doing a live remaster. Next start you
have your personal environment back to the way you booted it.While using a non persistent stick you can at any time remaster keeping your changes
and user environment. In contrast to using persistence to save changes the remaster
will boot and shutdown faster. Save data to live usb storage or another stick. Please do use the fantastic tools antiX provides, they are very useful, efficient
and well thought out.March 22, 2022 at 9:32 am #79571MemberPPC
::I messed up my system in the past, by installing Desktop Environments.
One thing we always have to think about is that D.E.’s were meant to be installed (and bring with them every single dependency they need, like for example, session managers)… Not uninstalled. Once they are installed there may be no way to get back to how your system originally was.
I know, I know – there is no warning on that one on Package Installer, Synaptic, apt… Unlike other operating systems, Linux usually does not try to limit your freedom. Do you want to install another interface that replaces the one you have? You can do that, no problem… Think about this analogy – Linux is a house, where you can do a complete makeover, torn down wall, open new windows (ah… do you see what I did just now 🙂 )… but once you do that, how can do put everything just like it was? You can, but it’s more expensive to change back everything to what it was before than just level everything and redo the house from scratch… That’s what Moddit, and me suggest.
If you like performing MAJOR system changes like installing Desktop Environments:
1- boot from live media and try out the changes
2- make a frugal install and try out the changes that way – you can have as many frugal installs in your hard drive as your disk space allows.
3- back up everything that’s in your system before performing any change, so you can restore everything to what it was before…P.

::Thank you for the responses.
Okay, so latest update, i managed to get back to where i wanted. I googled around and tinkered and read up on stuff and realised that during the installation of gnome , it had asked me to choose a display manager from among gdm and slimski. I had no idea what this was, and being lazy i had just tried gdm to see if it worked.
So, now, i thought instead of removing gnome, i should try to first set slimski as display manager and see if that solves my problem. So, i used the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure to set slimski as the display manager.
And it worked. I re booted, and i finally got the familiar login screen of antix and i used the f1 button to scroll through the options till i reached rox-iwm and i logged in into that.I learned a lesson about not doing too much “desktop environment hopping.”
I have now settled on KDE plasma desktop environment. i installed it from the antix software installer and it is working fine for my needs. I will stick to that for now.
Thank you for your prompt reply.

::“You can also make a USB Live stick start without setting up persistence, as long as

Do, i just boot using the same pen drive if i want to start live usb without persistence ?

::Thank you. I will make sure to try changes through live usb in the future, before doing them for real.

::Does the live usb stick start WITH persistence by default or without persistence by default
To use persistence you have to specificaly set it up. A small amount of data is always saved for user convenience even
when persistence options are not used, major changes will be lost on shutdown unless a remaster is performed..I make a stick using antix tool or other method.
Select boot device on the computer.Set my language and timezone on the antix boot screen
Boot antix, set your fastest repo using the controll center tool, do sudo apt full-upgrade,
update the kernel as older versions are vunerable. If you are on a device with low memory
you may need to do the kernel and system updates in stages.
Do a personal remaster, that will incorporate the changes in to the usb stick.
Reboot, just select antix, no need to keep setting language.
Customise antiX desktop. Make a backup ISO Snapshot at this stage using antiX tool.
Put it where you have safe space. For safe easy recovery I write the snapshot to a separate USB stick and ensure it will boot,
then keep it safe, it is my personal antiX.Boot with the first stick and make experiments with that, add extra software and test it. If
you do not wish to keep changes just shutdown without a remaster. If you are unsure or wish
to keep changes do a personal remaster. To revert you still have your personal antiX boot stick and the ISO snapshot.
