It depends what desktop you have selected, and what theme you are using. They should be part of the theme you are using. Try selecting a different theme from the menu.

Hi BobC and thanks for the reply. I have now lost my original start button completely and cannot find IceWM or whatever it was and also have lost the useful widgets that I had in my taskbar. Spoilt for choice of desktops and themes I have tried many combinations but cannot get back to what I had. I do, however, now have the symbols I first requested!
Very new to Antix which I am using on temp 32 bit machine so please forgive my dumb questions.
          Otherwise rather like Antix.

Still no joy. Please can somebody help me get back to IceWM start button. I cannot find this anywhere in themes or anywhere else. It would be good to get back to the original desktop when I had just installed. Are there defaults I can select or what?

              Ctrl+Esc brings up the menu

I hesitate to suggest how to fix it because I’m not an expert and not understanding what happened to cause it.

              My thoughts would be to:

              1. save your files and create a new user and sign on with that user. if it all works ok, then you messed up the things in your home folder, not the whole system. consider copying your files to the new user id and using it instead.

              or

              2. save your files and reinstall from ISO

              or

              3. save your files and switch the desktop to using JWM and then reinstall all IceWM related packages that included any of the files that were lost, then switch the desktop back to IceWM.

If you know a filename that was lost and you have apt-file installed, you can find out what package supplied it using

              apt-file search filename

But I’m not sure what all the files were.

Do you know what you were doing immediately before they disappeared? I’ve never had anything like this happen unless I was out there on the disk deleting, renaming or moving files. That can make quite a mess if done outside of your home directory.

PS: try changing to a different theme. You didn’t say which you liked. You can change to one you like. See if that fixes the start button.

BTW”: the metal2 and Default themes both have start buttons that say IceWM. Default is at the very bottom of the Themes list.

PSS: I noticed that with theme set to Default the boxes up in the right corner are all blank. Try Metal2 instead. Its very similar.

The default desktop on antiX is rox-icewm. You can go back to it in the menu

                      desktop > alternative desktops > rox-icewm

If this option (rox-icewm) is not available from the menu anymore , please try to reinstall desktop-session-antix
                      sudo apt install --reinstall desktop-session-antix

The default theme on antiX is blue-day, It’s available from the menu > themes

Many thanks caprea, the reinstall was what was needed. I have no idea how or why the rox-icewm disappeared before, just grateful for your reply.
Sadly none of the other advice above from BobC, no doubt well intentioned, didn’t help because none of the suggestions were possible. It was as though the writer was looking at a different system. Ctrl + Esc did nothing, no metal2 or Default shown in themes menu, but BobC is right in one thing. Having returned to Rox-IceWM desktop and theme, the top right three boxes are empty, which is where I started.

Yeah, when you came back and said the start button was missing, I knew there were bigger problems lurking…

If you don’t like the Blue Day theme, try one of the Clearview Blue ones or metal2. Your boxes will reappear, I would hope.

Thanks for the rescue, Caprea 🙂
