      if i run synaptic from the applications menu, it doesn’t ask me for my password, but does seem to be able to install new software etc.
      however, i did notice that a couple of things didnt install properly (e.g., installed grub customizer this way, and it doesn’t launch from the menu at all) and i had to reinstall them from terminal using apt as root.
      is there some way i can get synaptic, or other programs run from the icewm menu, to prompt for password so they run as root?

        ::

        Control Centre > Session > Password prompt.

        Authentication mode – Choose root.

        antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

          Once you have entered your password, it will be saved for 15 minutes. (I believe it was 15)
          Only after this timeframe, you have to type your password again.
          This will save you from typing your password over and over again.

          I guess this is the circumstance you see here.
