Hi everyone,
I read, ” systemd-free linux live CD distribution based on Debian Stable”
What does it mean exaclty?I am anything but a linux expert, and I’ve always used ubuntu distros and had a look at debian once,
so bear with me please.
I happen to be here because someone told me that antix is very light and it would run smoothly on my old laptop.
So, before I go ahead I’d like to figure out what the difference are between a systemd and systemd-free that I should aware of before starting using the latter. Any differences with commands to run in the terminal? Thanks

A ordinary end user, probably won’t notice any difference between init systems, other than the resources being used. The only difference in commands run in the terminal is starting, finishing processes that run from the init. Other than that, the only different commands are those that are systemd dependt (that is currently far more than just an init system)- some commands that end in ctl (ex: systemctl), for example, are systemd dependent and won’t run in antiX. You can’t suspend your computer with systemctl suspend, for example, but we have other commands that do exactly the same thing (and GUI’s for most common tasks).
Snaps, that are systemd dependent, won’t run on antiX, other than that, you probably won’t notice any change…

Would I install and setup samba, xRDP, the same way for example? Thanks

::My own observations are that linuxes which uses systemd are slower than non-systemd linuxes.

::To install and setup SAMBA in antiX: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/how-to-create-a-samba-shared-folder-your-private-network/#post-79058
You can install xrdp on antiX, using Synaptic or the terminal (sudo apt install xrdp). I never used it, but it’s available under antiX.
I also created a small GUI script that detects and connects to samba shared folders- it’s available if you serch for Samba, here in the forum, but it’s also part of the package ft10-transformation, available on our repo, that includes a few extras for antiX and also allows a different interface, using tint2 as toolbar and jgmenu as toolbar menu…
It’s almost 100% certain that if something exists for Debian, Ubuntu (that’s Debian based), it’s available under other Debian based distros, even non systemd ones (like antiX), with very few exceptions.
I advise you to take a look at our pinned entries, on the threads, that help you figure out how antiX and the forum work. That will probably save you from asking many questions!P.

::The internet is full of the discussion. Some factual info.
Non systemd systems do not hang for minutes on shutdown. Something
I experienced with Buntu, Mint Manjaro Arch and recently vanilla debian.SysV and even more so runit are easily understood, easy to control.
Do their job then get out of the way, also have easily human readable
logfiles.
Systemd is not an init, more a trojan horse which pervasively invades and takes
over an entire linux setup in such a way that it is very difficult or in some cases
impossible to remove without disabling the entire distribution or machine. No crazy depends chains.
I experienced personally in a demonstration that removing a minor application
could take out an entire desktop on Manjaro. With crazy depend removed from the
package everything worked in a sensible manner.Would I use a sysd distro, unless literaly forced never again.

I experienced with Buntu….I have experimented the same things as you (when I was into Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, so a long time ago)

::Like RJP said, if you are using the default IceWM Window Manager, there’s a GUI to add and remove quick launch icons to the toolbar. You can search for it, like suggested, using our app searcher (app-select) or run it directly from: antiX Menu > Aplications > antiX > IceWM Toolbar Icon Manager (it’s the two ice covered mountain tops, with the gear symbol on the lower right).
antiX really has GUI’s for most common tasks, antiX 23, currently in beta, has even more GUI’s…P.

::I never even saw that icewm-toolbar-icon-manager error before, and I wrote the script…
Edit: what you should be seeing is buttons, with icons on the left side: Help, Advanced configuration, Add Icon; Remove Icon, Move Icon and Undo.
What version of antiX did you install?
I suggest antiX 22 Full (64 or 32 bits, according to your CPU).
Also, there may be some problem with your iso download, if you did not check it, and it’s a Full version of antiX.P.

::Hello metajo.
Welcome to Antix Linux and the Forum.
I don’t know how to write in English and send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything. If your native language is not English, please translate my original Portuguese language text in Brazil directly into your language with the help of internet translators that you will get a much better result.
Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:
What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum. When I started using Antix, I read the tutorials that the PPC created, these readings spared me a lot of my time and I think it saves the time of any new Antix user. Your time will not be lost with these readings, it will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You will not waste your time with internet searches or even create new topics, on the contrary, you will earn a lot of time from these readings. I recommend you try the work areas that have “ZZZ” in your name. I usually use the “ZZZ-Icewm” or “ZZZ-JWM” or “ZZZ-Fluxbox” (each of these work areas have their own characteristics and consume more or less resources). ZZZFM will be the default file manager in your desktop, it is very similar to other file managers from other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access the other Antix work areas, click the Antix menu (or right -click), desktop, switch between desktops and click on the work area name, instantly to desktop will be loaded.
In the Portuguese language area of this forum, there are several tutorials that may be useful for you . Use an automatic translator from the internet so you can understand the text.
Whenever you need to request technical help or support in this forum, explain in detail what is happening, do not save the words, be thorough when writing, enter the characteristics of your computer, such as the brand and the model. If possible, post the result of the command $ Inxi -zv7 of the terminal, copy and paste here in the message of the topic you create in this forum.
When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify Me of Follow-Up Replies via email”, marking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are answers from topic in question.
About “SystemD”, if you search the internet for “reasons not to use SystemD”, you will find several good reasons, such as these two: infoworld and endeavouros..
I talk a lot with the leaders of the PCLinuxOS Brasil community, once someone asked in the Telegram group “what are the reasons for not using SystemD”, immediately someone replied “I don’t want SystemD for free…”, after this somewhat “dry” response, the staff argued that it has to do with the ability to have control over everything that is installed in your operating system and that “SystemD” takes away this control from most common people who are not able to understand the programming language built into “SystemD”. And that “SystemD” does many things that other programs do individually and with greater quality.
When I started looking for a GNU/Linux distribution in 2019, I had no idea what “SystemD” was, but I had contact with it. My experience was that all the GNU/Linux distributions I tested that had “SystemD” were always much slower than the GNU/Linux distributions that didn’t have “SystemD”.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.
