Hi!
Is it possible to add Telegram-desktop to the antiX 21 package installer? Its available in MX 21, and I’ve installed it on antiX 21 from the MX repo and it seems to work just fine. The version available in bullseye backports is a bit dated.

::To answer that I created a live USB of antix 21 full, used antix Updater, and then downloaded the package from the ftp server.
$ sudo apt install ./telegram-desktop_4.0.2+ds-2~mx21+1_amd64.deb

Need to get 25.3 MB/53.5 MB of archives.
After this operation, 185 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]I went ahead with the installation, including rec packages, and it works. The resulting memory footprint when running telegram this way is, according to ps_mem, 298.9 MiB. Running the statically linked binary provided by telegram from their website uses 424.4 MiB. Thats a big deal on an old computer with 750 MiB of ram.

::If I am not confusing something here I think that installation of the additional set of libs can avoided by downloading the latest version (4.2) directly from Telegram and just decompressing folder. Telegram would be started by execution (mouse right-click Execute) of telegram file.
This is the way I have it currently but will test also installing directly when the files become available in the repo. Currently the version is 3.1 I think…Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::Thats true. Thats the way I have it on one of my antix 19 installs. What I’ve noticed is that the amount of memory used by such “statically linked” binaries (ie all the libraries are included at compile time) is much greater (about 33% more). That also seems to be true of Firefox.

“Install from your distribution package manager (Recommended)
To install Firefox using your distribution package manager, please refer to your Linux distribution’s documentation.
This method is recommended because it ensures Firefox and all the required libraries are installed and configured optimally for your distribution.”
And from an efficiency standpoint it seems redundant that all programs should be statically linked. But I’m really not an expert.

::@anticapitalista
FYI, I can’t find Telegram in the package installer or in the antix repos. Unsure what “soon” means in these circumstances but I thought I would let you know.

::I see, thank you!
I’ve been checking my local ftp

but I assume it will get there eventually.

::UPDATE
It seems that the debian bullseye backports version of Telegram Desktop now closely mirrors the latest release available. At least for the last couple of releases the debian backports package has been promptly updated, whereas previously it would lag considerably. This is a welcome change, as having the latest version ensures full compatibility with other users on other platforms who are invariably using the latest version. Users of antix 21/22 can install from backports by using
apt install -t bullseye-backports telegram-desktop
There is also a universal linux binary provided by Telegram themselves, but using the debian version uses a lot less memory (see comparison above).

Just installed on my antiX22 SID. Appears to work fine. Telegram installed version is 4.4.1 +.Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):
