I’m starting to make some headway on the kernel boot issue on my Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop, but I don’t fully understand what’s happening.
When I attempt to boot either a 4.9 or 5.10 kernel from our antiX kernels (and possibly others), I’m finding /var/log errors with slimski that repeatedly say:
“slimski: unable to connect to X server
slimski: Stale lockfile found, removing it
envlang received as: en_US.UTF-8slimski: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections
Giving up.”
However, I’m finding that IF I use a Liquorix kernel, they work.
Moreover, when I look at the xorg logs that are successful, I see that they are able to deduce the mouse pointer, video display, etc., but the ones that fail seem to have an issue with a framebuffer (possibly), but I need to study this more.
In the meantime, if this gives anyone an idea what’s going on here, I can make a few changes, and that may enable both the 4.9 and 5.10 kernels to WORK – they’re certainly NOT deficient, but this problem may be affecting two or three of us with the way we’ve set things up. Thoughts?

I have switched to the 2nd version of the patched 5.10.142 kernel that I downloaded from your repository and it continues to work fine on my minimilistic (Openbox) Sid install.
But I don’t recall if you said that this is one of the currently SECURITY patched kernels, like the recommended 5.10.137?

@stevesr0: the 5.10.142 revision 2 kernel that’s in the link is a complete kernel, but it’s put together in the test link simply as two packages, not tightly integrated with other packages right now, so while it’s good to test it, anticapitalista also said that it’d be coming to Sid, then Testing, and finally Stable some time in the near future. So if you have tried it and it works, great; if not, I think the images he posted are good, but they don’t have the same “look and feel” when you examine the kernel details, especially comparing, say 137 to 142; the 142 kernel has the latest bits, as far as what anti has seen from testers and reviewers about their hardware and their issues, and I’m pretty sure it has any 5.10 patches, whether security or functionality, changes in place too; beyond that, we have it in the link supplied mostly so the testing community can test it out; that effort has been pretty successful, but since you’ve been one of our most active Sid testers recently, I’m glad you’re using it, since you have slightly different test cases than most of the rest of us right now.

The one “thing” I’m still seeing, trying to run the various kernels repeatedly is that the 142 kernel is very sensitive to something, perhaps a SELinux policy; I see stuff about SElinux policy:33 mentioned and then we wait for /dev… but this doesn’t ALWAYS happen.

I still want to revisit that “Waiting on /dev” issue; it appears to create a hang even now; workaround is to keep a 4.9 kernel, boot it first, then reboot, and select the 5.10.142 kernel next and it usually works; kind of a kludge; I’ll see if that continues to solve the ‘hang’. If it does, it begs the question: “What else is incorrectly configured?”

Would bootchart help identify where the hangup is in the loading of /dev? (At least, if you can predict when a long boot time because of a delay in loading /dev will likely occur.)

I see this also in the dmesg log, but I don’t see any performance issues.
I have been running this 5.10.142 v2 kernel on many different computers. Works good so far.

Yeah, I see that message too. The only issue I encounter is on my Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop, which has intermittent issues booting various kernels.
I’m using 5.10.142 now:
