::Particularly (in my testing) kernel 5.10.142, which appears to have the smallest memory footprint and best memory management. Calciumsodium did not see any memory footprint gains running sysvinit but with my systems as runit I definitely see better memory footprint vs. 5.10.104 by about 10Mb. I am very particular about memory footprint and it is noticeable. Perhaps some optimizations have taken place…
To supplement my previous observation, comparing antiX kernel 5.10.142 (configured by anticapitalista), which was vs. other versions of kernel 5.10.xxx:
Unexpected to me another observation is that kernel 5.10.142 appears to be attributed for equal (or even slightly lower by 1-3 Mb) initial memory footprint of antiX 21 runit (*elogind*-free) than stock kernel 4.9, as provided in antiX 21. This is quite a surprise to me…
If anticapitalista (or Debian) has done some significant optimization, then it is a significant accomplishment. If someone knows what has been done I would appreciate some info…
My testing has been done on Thinkpad T410 laptops from 2010: i5, 4Gb, Nouveau driver on nVidia NVS3100. I will check on some other laptops as well…- This reply was modified 7 months, 2 weeks ago by olsztyn.

::@olsztyn: I’m really happy to hear that antiX kernel 5.10.142 has worked so well for you. I did have some success with it too on my Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop, though I was also battling with unexplained boot issues with both the 137 and 142 instances on that system, whereas the 4.9, 4.19 and Liquorix kernels all worked with out any “tweaks” necessary.
The thing we can take away from all of this is thankfulness that we have so many choices that allow us to run these systems.
The irony of it all is that to get the laptop I’m using now working, I had to manually copy multiple things from elsewhere: 1) the kernel image, 2) the kernel headers, 3) the modules, and 4) the kernel firmware, plus I had to pull in an extra wireless firmware file from another system, but thanks to multi-booting, I was able to copy and hack all of these things and I’m running here today on a system that requires a 5.16 or newer kernel – my HP 14-fq1025nr laptop. I’m about to update my status information on that very system in my information thread, which I keep for historical and test data information, plus FYI for anyone with similar hardware.

::I had promised to test your 5.10.142 kernel on this 32 bit notebook. So here I’m with the results. The kernel boots very fast, but it wouldn’t start X, asking for console login instead. Here are the logs and dmesg output (attached) I’ve saved immediately after startup. Maybe you can make something of it.

envlang received as: de_DE slimski: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections Giving up. slimski: unable to connect to X serverSo I’m back to 4.9.0-326-antix.1-686-smp-pae, which works great in antiX 21 test USB-stick, and for everyday usage I’m still on antiX 19 using 4.19.0-256-antix.1-686-smp-pae with old nvidia proprietary drivers, allowing way better graphics performance on this device than nouveau still.

::Just for comparison, I’ve installed latest debian default kernel on antiX 21, since I’ve read while searching for a solution for this nouveau issue in 5.10 kernel from above, that these issues should vanish in 5.15 kernel magically. In the repos doesn’t seem to exist any 5.15 kernel, so I installed latest available default debian kernel from the backport repos:
linux-image-5.19.0-0.deb11.2-686-pae: Installiert: 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1 Installationskandidat: 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1 Versionstabelle: *** 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1 100 100 http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-backports/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/statusAnd what should I say, actually the issue from the 5.10 kernel is fixed, it boots antiX straight up to desktop. It even uses nouveau driver on a speed and clean view I’ve never seen from nouveau ever before here. This comes very near already to the proprietary nvidia drivers. Will need to get some further stress testing, but it looks promising, really. For now it seems to run absolutely stable. Maybe I can get rid of the proprietary nvidia stuff in near future and switch to 5.x kernel series for everyday work… I’m writing these lines from this very system right now. It’s amazing! Here the details:

Would rather like to run an antiX kernel than this debian one…

::@Robin – have you tried the default 5.10 Debian kernel?
If that works, then there is something wrong with our 5.10 kernel on some hard drive.
If not, then the fault lies with the 5.10 series.Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::hello @anticapitalista ,
have you tried the default 5.10 Debian kernel?
If that works, then there is something wrong with our 5.10 kernel on some hard drive.
If not, then the fault lies with the 5.10 series.I had not checked this before, but I’ve managed to do some testing early this morning. Here the results:
Since there was no debian kernel 5.10.142 I have tested the nearest available, one before and one after, (5.10.140-1 and 5.10.149-2 both), which come whith packages linux-image-5.10.0-18-686-pae (signed) and linux-image-5.10.0-19-686-pae (signed). As with the most recent 5.19.0-0.deb11.2-686-pae kernel from debian backports antix boots with them straight up to the desktop, no issues. The 5.19 kernel comes with a perfecly stable, fast and fluid noveau (at least when running single head this one is absoulutely equivalent to what I was used from proprietary nvidia driver stuff, but I had not time to test in a multihead setup with an additional screen or TV out by now.).
So I decided to re-check your 5.10.142-antix.2 kernel, I apt-purged it from the system first, then remastered, installed it anew from repos, using apt. But after remaster and live kernel update it fails again with the same issue, not detecting the graphics card properly. So unfortunately this was not an arbitrary faulty install. Then I gave the 5.10.137-antix.1-686-smp-pae kernel a try, same issue with this one, it stops on console login (It is possible to force them into desktop using the fb mode instead of noveau, but only blurry, flickering and lowres screen then, no way to change it to proper resolution using xrandr.) So I reinstalled the 5.19 debian again to the very stick, without changing anything else, and again it ran straight through to desktop.
While installing the 5.x kernels I noticed an additional issue, which might get addressed also (but it doesn’t keep the kernels from booting to desktop, the debian kernels suffer from it also):

Couldn’t find out what triggers the loss, sometimes it happens, and sometimes the old .md5 file is perfectly backuped. But the system works still without these, and I believe they can easily get recreated manually if needed, if I’m not mistaken. Does antiX check the files against them while starting up?
Technical details:
The logs from debian 5.10.0-18 and 5.10.0-19 look exactly like the one from 5.19.0 I’ve posted above, so I don’t repost it here (in case you need them, just let me know, I’ve stored them) Here’s what I’ve got from 5.10.137-antix.1-686-smp-pae kernel:

from inxi output could give some hint. If even inxi cant’t see the needed info, there is something missing obviously.Regards

::@Robin – thanks for the feedback.
Do the Debian 5.10 kernels you tried give “a perfecly stable, fast and fluid noveau” like the 5.19 one?
Note to self – this applies to the 686 pae kernel not 64 bit one.
Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::From my impression with the 5.19 kernel it runs more agile than with the 5.10 kernels, but the difference is not very striking or distinctive. I haven’t seen any issues with the debian default 5.10 kernels. Meanwhile I’ve done a dist upgrade this evening to antiX 22 to this notebook which couldn’t have run even on antiX 21 until now due to nouveau driver failed and no nvidia proprietary 304.137 was installable. Will have to check some details (like suspend/resume etc.), but now everything works fine, fast and fluid as I’ve last seen in antiX 17 on this notebook, even when I had force installed the 304.137 to antiX 19 it didn’t run that smooth than before in 17 since parts of xorg had to be hold back from update for this. Now this lightheartedness is back on this notebook in antiX 22.
Great work, anticapitalista, many thanks for making all this possible! I’ll switch soon from antiX 19 to antiX 22 for everyday work, using for now the default debian kernel 5.19 from the backports.

::Yesterday with fresh and fully updated antiX 22 Bullseye Live stick, init runit.
Fails to boot on 5x (modern) kernel with a green blank screen on one occasion with message usb hub detected.Installed the antiX experimental kernel, same failure mode.
Legacy kernel boots and works fine. Debian 18 and 19 kernels working without issue.
Presently running on debian Kernel: 5.18.0-4-amd64 x86_64 Up: 2h 26m
CPU: quad core Intel Core i5-2500K (-MCP-) speed/min/max: 2345/1600/3700 MHzNo further time to experiment at present.
Will try to run a series 6 kernel sometime soon. -
