      Regardless of level the icons that represent files and directories are displayed but the name labels are missing.

      How do I get them back?

        Perhaps you can clue us into what file manager is experiencing the problem… on which desktop… etc.

        You might post the results of inxi -F or similar….

          As manyroads says, please provide more information.

          You could try to see names when setting the view mode to “List View” or hit the Toolbar icon “Show extra details”. If you cannot see the names either, do you see a “Name” column? If so, does text appear in the other columns to? Maybe it is a font color problem.

          If you can share more info, like manyroads has asked, and a screenshot, we may be able to help.
