Running a Old as dirt Pentium 2 system with a Geforce FX5200 video card (Know NVIDIA drivers won’t work, its old as dirt too). The problem is when I installed the OS, I get corrupted video data. I ran xrandr –prop on both the live CD and the installed version and got different results with the same monitor. The Live CD picks up the EDID info from the monitor for Noveau, and works fine, the installed version does not. Neither version boots Firefox, but one thing at a time 🙂

::If you are wondering how I got to such a state, I first tried to do a system install using the Live CD installer, which failed, multiple times, always hanging up at the GRUB install, leaving me with a system without a ID or password to login. I tried to download updates, and to install persistance, but that failed as well, leaving me to try Installing without GRUB, which was successful, then Installing GRUB via the BootRepair GUI. That got me to actual usage, but corrupted video data. I know there is a way to manually enter EDID information to Noveau, which might be a band-aid solution, but the video driver works in live CD boots just fine, so, yeah irritating.

::And install is Antix 17.2. I’d screenshot it, and the system info, but I can’t login using Dillo as my web browser. It won’t accept cookies.

::THANKS! the tip about the flash Player actually got firefox going! Its all corrupted, and I’ll be doing some cut and paste only on that machine, so bear with me, because I don’t know exactly what will be most helpful. I’ll start with running Processes, and then try system info. I can see Xterminal fine, but everything else is a green and brown smudge for the most part.

You could blacklist the nvidiafb by creating a file in etc/modprobe.d named blacklist-nvidiafb.conf
In this file write the following
blacklist nvidiafbOr with one command in terminal
echo "blacklist nvidiafb" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidiafb.confYou maybe have to run
update-initramfs -u
afterwardsYou could also try this first temporally by adding a bootparameter to your grubline, by pressing the e key on the bootscreen and adding
nvidiafb.blacklist=yes
to the linux-bootline.Maybe better, because I’m not sure if you might will land at tty.December 4, 2018 at 11:23 pm #13895MemberLostRider

::Success! I’m no longer seeing oddities! So, what’s that “etc/modprobe.d named blacklist-nvidiafb.conf

“solution?
As in where do I go to enter that Info?December 5, 2018 at 12:38 am #13898MemberLostRider
::Did a bit on Synaptic Package Manager, I removed “Nvidia Detect” and added “Nvidia Installer Cleanup” re-booted without any temporary fix, and it worked! No Idea if the temporary fix held, or that without the Nvidia Detect program running, it didn’t load the faulty driver, or the Installer cleanup locked it out.
