pls NEVER EVER use sudo to start a browser. No attacker needs elevated priveliges if you help them like that.

you can download latest Tor from https://www.torproject.org.
Pls note: Tor Browser will when installed this way still automaticaly update itself as needed showing
a notification. Updates slow browser start, a whats new info is also offered.

I extracted the tar.gz archive and it contains 3 directories (data, debug, tor). None of them contain something like “start-tor-browser”, as I can see.

Perhaps you need to dig deeper, my 64-bit contains it in ‘tor-browser/Browser/’.
In my case, the file/script is usually already executable.
Side-note: Successful running it may depend on (default) permissions of the partitions where the file resides.

BTW, if you need to find files in a directory, you may use ‘find’, ‘locate’ (relies on a database) or there is a find/search-file option somewhere in ‘mc’ file-browser.
In your case, you could open terminal, change directory to where the ‘tar.gz’ is unpacked (Downloads?) and run e.g.
find ./ -type f -iname '*start*'

Hi andfree, pls do not worry, we are all learning :-).
most of us anyway.

Please go to `https://www.torproject.org/download/ OR
https://www.torproject.org/download/languages/`
and download the browser, Tor project recommends to use the
US English version so you blend with the crowd.

You can of course use whatever you like.

Unpack the archive, I put mine in, for example home .tor
The starter would then be /home/yourusername/.tor/start-tor-browser
I set that to executable, sybok says that may not be neccesary

For safety Keep tor in home, it should never be run as root,
i.e. with sudo
or from the / or anywhere like /opt or /user in root filesystem.

The graphical button starter included in tor will not work,
I renamed it to Botherstart-tor-browser.desktop

Made a personal menu entry, moddit posted an easy howto somewhere
in the forum. It uses the control center menu tool.

There is also an add to personal menu tool in the antiX menu.

Thanks. I downloaded this archive. I created a .tor directory in home and extracted the archive there. But I don’t see any start-tor-browser file, only a start-tor-browser.desktop one. It doesn’t work:

I downloaded file ‘tor-browser-linux32-12.0.1_ALL.tar.xz’ (seems to be the one you recommended, file-size 102MB [partial output of the following command: ls -lh *.tar.xz] = 106460464 B [ls -l *.tar.xz]).
When I unpack it, I see a main directory ‘tor-browser/’ which contains the following two
‘tor-browser/start-tor-browser.desktop’ (a file) and
‘tor-browser/Browser/’ (a directory).
The directory comprises of several sub-folders and files, including the aforementioned file:
‘tor-browser/Browser/start-tor-browser’ (file-size 13kB = 13133B).

Not quite sure why you are unable to find this file.
Could it be your download is corrupted (verify using check-sums) or you run out of disk-space (can be checked via command-line ‘df -h’)?
Or you simply did not look into the sub-directories/folders even though advised to do so (“digging deeper”)?
Could you please post output of file-listing from the unpack archive, e.g. the below command lists the content (of directory ‘.tor/’ located in your home ‘~/’ directory) to a TXT file that you can post as an attachment.
find ~/.tor/ -type f -name '*' > ~/TOR_FILES.txt

I did, but not as carefully as I should. Tiredness & time pressure could be some explanation (not justification). Really sorry. The file is there and Tor seems to work fine. Many thanks for your help.

Hi PPC,
I lost tor browser launcher in a recent update, browser still present and working
but rest broken. Assumed due to my “mildly different” :-)) antiX rolling setup.

Recommended the easiest way out for andfree. As tor will still auto update safe solution.

I am not 100% sure this is relevant to the current confusing situation, but let me share my experience anyway:

When Debian (and hence also antiX) had a large delay in updating browsers, I manually downloaded a standalone Firefox binary from Mozilla, unpacked it and used it.
This is similar to manually downloading the tor-browser in the archive.

Such a binary is not installed in the system and ‘apt[-get|itude]’ will not update it.
Still, you may check for updates (browser’s main menu: Help -> About…) and it auto-updates just as in Windows.
This independence on packaging/repositories is an advantage if the packages fall behind the latest releases.

Tor will not be updated by apt, that can only pull in any update to the torbrowser-launcher application.
I hope below is enough explanation, any more needed I will do my best to help.

As can be seen below in a simulated install, The torbrowser-launcher in debian/antiX is a helper application.
It is intended to make installing and starter setup easier.
Torbrowser is not installed from debian or antiX repositorys. It is downloaded by the debian application and
put in to the users home directory.
Tor is shown as a recommended package. When you install tor the way I explained and start the browser you can
open the settings menu and see that the browser is set to install updates automaticaly.
Sybok has seen the same setting in firefox, Torbrowser is Firefox with changes and extras so that part of the
interface looks the same. Torbrowser is not firefox, please do not use addons or make changes in about:config,
both can severly break security and privacy. Remember please, Tor is pretty good for privacy but it is not bullet
proof protection.

Please do read about Tor, you can open info from the browser window. Take a visit to https://www.torproject.org/

Let Torbrowser remain set to auto update,
that is important for your safety and security.

After an update Torbrowser will display an update notice top left and let you read about changes if you wish.

One of the reasons I prefer the direct download is it does not pull in any extra packages. Pls see simulated
install below for further details in that regard.

then open torbrowser launcher from menu. wait to download tor browser and then you should have tor browser running.

Tor browser bundles its own tor daemon running in port 9051 (iirc).
so, if you run tor from console (like the 2nd quote in OP), you’re trying to run system installed tor daemon, which is already running in port 9050 (and fails)..
