A not so sensible tutorial on https://tutorialforlinux.com/2019/08/17/how-to-install-tor-browser-on-antix-gnu-linux-easy-guide/

I am pretty new to AntiX and ICE WM. After figuring out how to install TOR to /home/XXX so it will automaticaly update from torproject then adding it to the start menu and task bar I was talking to my daughter and at a whim casually searched for “install tor in AntiX”.

A web site came up at first place in Duck Duck from a guy who calls himself the enlightened and linux evangelist. the adress https://tutorialforlinux.com/2019/08/17/how-to-install-tor-browser-on-antix-gnu-linux-easy-guide/. There is no contact information on the site, something which I dislike, illegal in EU too…I did not look at further posts.

The published guide to installing uses sudo commands, elevates owner to root and puts tor in /opt. Not the best idea.

Please never use sudo or root or change permissions to do anything with TOR browser, if you unpack the bundle to a place of your choice in home TOR will start and run with user privileges, you will never need sudo to add TOR Browser as a menu item or at any time during usage.
Tor will automatically update without privelege elevation from the project site when you start it always giving you the latest and least vunerable version.

If you watch the film on adding personal menu items its pretty easy to add a starter for TOR. Adding to the ICE task bar is also explained by Dolfin Oracle during his tutoria video. If anyone finds that insufficient and would like a step by step guide for ICE WM please ask.

One caveat, up to now I have no sound from TOR Browser, that also applies to latest version of Firefox, I think there is a fix here in the forum but that is for the next rainy day.

If you know this already please no need for comment. It is meant for new users especially those coming from Blue Screen OS.

So how does this become an antiX problem? Tor Browser is not included in a standard antiX installation. If you, or anybody else, wants to go messing about in the world of encryption software, well then they have forums of the own and/or you had better know what you are doing. Simples!

When you read (or watch) a tutorial about anything you should try to find out how much qualified the author is. Any reader should do that. It is best to follow tutorials only from legitimate sources. These are first the dosumentation of the distribution you are using, second man pages from the programs you installed, third documentation from other Linux distributions (but you should check how to adapt the information to your distro), fourth books about Linux in general, fifth articles and videos from people not associated with any distribution or software project.

Hi ModdIt, for the sound problem, did you try to start latest firefox with

            apulse firefox

apulse should be preinstalled on antiX

It may also works if you start tor-bowser with the apulse command

@ VW I did not say installing TOR is a direct problem for AntiX, please read the bottom line. AntiX is attracting a lot of new users with little or no linux experience. IMHO the first place they should look for sensible help on topics which interest them or problems is the forum. Many users where I live ( EU country ) are privacy concious, sick of total surveillance, being tracked and at best bombed with crappy ads. TOR is not a total solution but does help to some extent. The argument only criminals want tools like this is hogwash.
If you have nothing to hide please do publish your clear name and adress here, date and place of birth, telefone number, credit card numbers including security codes. National insurance numbers E Mail adresses and passwords, details of any health issues to prove your opinion. ( ever look at TED Talks on privacy and surveillance ),

@eugen-b good constructive advice. You know I know but new users especially kids should not have to get wise the hard way. In some countries even using tor to read the news in the west is enough to get a visit, interrogation torture or lead to death. We are living in a world of Orwells worst dreams, some others are hell on earth.

@caprea, Thanks for the “sound” advice 🙂 will give that a go in a moment.

I couldn’t agree more with https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/tor-browser-unsafe-tutorial-found-by-duck-search/#post-26212 but never take popular recommendations from 3rd parties without really understanding how things work from the source. I would only add a recommendation that alone as the only tool for anonymity and secure communication it may be best not used at all, and the source repeats everywhere that it is not its fault if it is not used correctly. There are open and free vpn solutions out there but before you try anything else I suggest you learn how dns works and what power does your isp have over it. I like opennic but there may be better ways I don’t know of.

In a system of exchange you would be a fool to believe that this great gift to humanity was handed out without an exchange value. I am talking of “communication media”. Paying for a product of a service does not describe the only obligation and right you have. There is more to it. The cheaper it is the more suspicious you should be.
