        noClue, but that’s how it looks.

        @ModdIt

        “One image is worth 1000 words” …

        No answer on why ICEWM should not be used in German. As caprea asked, where is the big screw up.

        Who planted that ?. Paint the roses, the queen hates white roses.

        For those who do not know, a big problem in wonderland.

        If 3000 words are not enough to understand where’s the screw up, than you must be living in Wonderland. 😉

          your pictures are oold .The new app-select is also missing.
          You missed the updates. Please update your system, especially with a beta, before telling people somethings got messed and is unusable.

              Now when you say … I didn’t miss the updates, but I did an upgrade from b2 to b3, without creating a new user afterwards.

                  That very much depends on the point of view.
                  For me, it just proves that the basic concept is broken.

                      All translations are here: antiX translations

                      Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

                      antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

                        Hallo BobC, you asked about what we are running. All those on AntiX have Beta3 with all updates.

                        As far as I am aware the slowest computer is my personal eepc netbook, it does now have an ssd which made a huge difference.
                        I5 machines, T420, T430. 4GB Mem and 240 GB SSD drive. Tough as old boots. Mine (T420) has survived some terrible mishandling while travelling in Asia.
                        Graphics box I5 with Nvidia card and 8GB Ram. Boot drive SSD 240GB 1 TB HDD.
                        2 with Pentium dual core @ 2.6 Ghz, one me one my daughter, both 240 GB SSD, I often just run from 16 or 32 Gig usb stick though. They are salvage, were meant to be dumped by local doctors surgery, would have been a waste.

                        We have 2 T430 still running Manjaro. If I give one older lady anything else she finds a minor difference and gets the screaming heebies.

                        One I5 Laptop has MX.

                        Others have diverse hardware from about 6 years old to recent 8 core gaming monsters.
                        Most of those are dual boot or more. Have seen a myriad of distros on one, boot menu a yard long.
                        Biggest problem: If legacy bios is no longer available we are left with few choices. UEFI is to my mind a pain in the ass system with a lot of real security concerns.

                          Ok, so what that says is that you should not be desperate for maximum performance, and better to improve ease of use and reduce opportunities for making mistakes.

                          Ok, here are my ideas based on that…

                          I would suggest trying rox-icewm (default) login and turn conky off once comfortable. The monitor windows at the bottom will give the most important info.

                          Try copying a document to the desktop. Then click it to open it. You can open the things you put there.

                          Try dragging and dropping a .desktop icon onto the desktop. Next try right-clicking the .desktop icon on the desktop, and then edit it with geany. Note that you can change many things about what runs or the parameters it gets passed. You could also rename the .desktop entry in German. Do that for the things you want to access from the desktop. The desktop could have things that are not used as much or you need different variations. Now teach the others how to put their own special things on the desktop which is easy to do. Use the “Show Desktop” button to see all the items on the desktop. Click that button again and all the windows pop back up where they were.

                          Maybe the toolbar should have things everyone uses ALL the time.

                          Maybe use the personal menu for things that you load for everyone that are less commonly used than the toolbar items but too much effort to find from the menu.

                          These are just ideas. Your house is like mine. Different people with different computers and wanting to do different things.

                            Hallo BobC, Thanks for the input, maybe not clear enough that we are more than a household, Bit of a slowdown right now though, in winter I will be offering Linux and coffee in the kitchen, maybe in a local restaurant too.

                            AntiX , MX, Devuan, Manjaro are jewels in the Linux landscape but most of the general public or kids in schools know nothing about them. Yes I do know Manjaro has systemd which I personaly dislike, I like Manjaro though. Great devs too. Its user choice. Bring what you have, For a donation to installed distro will also consider coming to users home. We will install most anything except for pirated software.

                            One major reason: Im really sick of good hardware going to what here is called a recycling center. Actually they let nobody take anything away from that place, just destroy what is recieved.

                            Maybe the toolbar should have things everyone uses ALL the time.

                            Yes set up pretty much that way already, we called regular usage once in two weeks. That has agenda reasoning..

                            Maybe use the personal menu for things that you load for everyone that are less commonly used than the toolbar items but too much effort to find from the menu.

                            We really trimmed our menu down as far as shown items is concerned. Some starters just in the toolbar config only worked after adding to personal, it works now

                            Icons on the desktop is no, we have decided to keep it without clutter. Linking to important folders is easy enough from the taskbar. Anything else right click on the desktop. Soon my thinking is to assign some shortcuts, maybe like winkey W LO writer, Winkey C, for calc, Winkey M for claws. Thats more about kids learning that this is their system, apart from the core system they can safely change most anything. As long as they keep saving important data that is.

                            Really important stuff, internal drive, external drive and live stick usb storage which gives a plugin, boot, continue to work solution. One major reason why I promote and support AntiX.

                            Until I can figure out how to make a headless browser canary Conky will stay. I also found it really useful while stopping Firefox LTS and Quantum sending so much up to Mozilla and Google, maybe elswhere too. Silent updates are blocked. User.js no longer works in the LTS or downloaded quantum bundle. In both experiments were enabled, only place that is mentioned is mozilla zine or privacy notice. Big story, off topic, too big for this thread. For our friend Chrome or chromium is a far worse privacy nightmare. No way.

                            In case of interest this is one master switch in Firefox current:
                            datareporting.policy.dataSubmissionEnabled Change to disabled.
                            Crash reporting is dangerous, it saves and sends a memory dump. Can be triggered with default settings.
                            How Convenient.

                            Where do I go to change the menu entry Wünsche, gave up trying to find tahat.

                            Thanks for your good input. Moddit

                              Yes, I ran Manjaro for a while too, then SlackoPup. If another distro is better once each are tuned, you should choose the best one.

                              I like your everything I used in the past 2 weeks idea for choosing what deserves to be on the toolbar. See pic. If autohide is used, I suggest increasing the AutoHideDelay in preferences to 1000

                              Soon my thinking is to assign some shortcuts, maybe like winkey W LO writer, Winkey C, for calc, Winkey M for claws. I like keyboard shortcuts also. I suggest creating a pop-up screen with a list of all the keyboard shortcuts and what they do both in German and English, even, maybe.

                              Where do I go to change the menu entry Wünsche, gave up trying to find tahat.

                              Wünsche is the German used for the IceWM Preferences option. That could be coming from IceWM itself at https://github.com/bbidulock/icewm/blob/icewm-1-4-BRANCH/po/de.po on line 1631. See picture. You or NoClue or Caprea could ask them to correct it.

                              PS: If you are using Claws-mail you could change the IceWM preferences to turn on the mail status monitor, have it make a sound when emails arrive, show how many new mails are there, and when you click it, it will pop up Claws mail.
                              Settings for mail:

                              $ cd ~/.icewm
                              bobc@xps15:~/.icewm
                              $ cat preferences | grep -i "mail"
                              # Show mailbox status on task bar
                              TaskBarShowMailboxStatus=1 # 0/1
                              # Beep when new mail arrives
                              TaskBarMailboxStatusBeepOnNewMail=1 # 0/1
                              #  Count messages in mailbox
                              TaskBarMailboxStatusCountMessages=1 # 0/1
                              # Execute taskbar applet commands (like MailCommand, ClockCommand, ...) on single click
                              # Delay between new-mail checks. (seconds)
                              MailCheckDelay=30 # [0-86400]
                              # Mailbox path (use $MAIL instead)
                              # MailBoxPath=""
                              # Command to run on mailbox

                                @ BobC thanks for the input,
                                On: PS: If you are using Claws-mail you could change the IceWM preferences to turn on the mail status monitor, have it make a sound when emails arrive, show how many new mails are there, and when you click it, it will pop up Claws mail.
                                Good input but perhaps not in an office or school classes.
                                IMHO I hope none of the kids do that, its bad enough getting WhatsCrap and Face*#– notification sounds turned off or at least reasonably quiet. Every time a phone pings in a bag a whole class starts shuffling on their seats. There is a regulation but it is often forgotten, thats the excuse anyway. Drives teachers crazy and is really bad for kids because social behaviour is an important school note. I do not teach in schools directly, just plant a lot of seeds/ideas, some are growing well. Was Parents rep for years so foot in the door.

                                On the menu item I was looking for where it is localy stored for now, I would like to discuss any change with German users or just lean on other popular distro solutions for naming on desktop. Then put up for discussion.
                                Help please NoClue or Caprea ??.
                                Most of what NoClue posted is now put on our menu. Thanks for the input. App Killer is still that way, as NoClue stated no sensible translation comes to mind and it seems understandable enough. Weirdest entry is Wünsche, we are thinking of Nützer Einstellungen for that but it does overlap with settings/Einstellungen. Also done by user, Maybe System Einstellunges is better for current settings entry. Nützer Einstellungen is user settings. One suggestion was Sonderwünsche, special wishes, maybe something better will be found or suggested. No Clue says that entry has been around a long time so another week or so should not worry too much.

                                One of the arguments which comes up against linux is often garnered with screenshots to show there are no standards, it is a partly valid criticism in some areas. What we call freedom of choice can be daunting for some newcomers as well as Company manegement teams, they are too blind to see the advantages for effiency. But they accept that MS changes things at a whim and makes you pay dearly for adapting. Broken applications after updates from that direction are a not uncommon pain too.

                                Btw. I have used puppy and derivatives, still do sometimes. Barry Kauler is I think it is fair to say a quirky genius. Lot of Lateral thinking and practical ideas come from down under, his are often exceptional. I still look what is coming from that direction. His website is still online so he still seems alive and kicking. I hope anyway.

                                  I am in an office and the dings are heard everywhere but what would be worse would be to not notice or respond to an important email.

                                  Obviously the claws settings are optional as they are all turned off by default. I thought you might not know they existed.

                                  You might also consider running the taskbar at the top of the screen if using autohide because at the bottom if double height it will cover up a lot of text that was likely the text you want to see.

                                  I will go away now. I can’t help with the translation issues.

                                  I hope it all works out well for you.
