All of the above is excellent advice. In the spirit of “lean and mean” I recommend nnn, its in the repos, sudo apt install nnn. Similar to MC but about as light on system resources as you can get

If I’ve ever used nnn before today, I have forgotten, but I installed and tried it.
The file manager looks like a terminal window, and in fact, virtually everything it runs also runs in a terminal window, but it’s pretty lean too, and yet another alternative.
