Looked thru some articles here didn’t answer my problem.
It starts the boot process from the DVD and after going to start the video it goes blank.
I have tried several boot options but can’t find the right one.
I know this system only has 500MB of ram and an 80GB HDD.
not sure on the video.Any help would be appreciated.

::I have antiX 21 installed on one such laptop – its a great machine (great sound columns, great video), works great with antiX 21.
-Please make sure you are using antiX 21 32bits
-I booted from a Plop boot cd and from there I booted from a usb pen-drive with antiX
-At most tasks (mainly at video) it’s faster than my 64bits netbook, that’s some 6 years younger…Note: My laptop is not standard because I had it fitted with 512mb more almost 10 years ago (it has 1 gb of RAM)

::Yeah I have the 32 bit . antX said that when I tried the 64bit.
What video choice did you have to make to get to see the screen on install?
I’ll try the PLOP ideaApril 16, 2022 at 5:57 pm #81495Membermaybl8

::I don’t recall having made any particular choice about video when I booted antiX for the first time (from my plop boot cd). Perhaps that helped me, because when I boot from plop I don’t get the “usual” antiX boot menu – probably that helped out with any video problems the initial boot screen may have on this laptops…
Try this; boot from plop cd, wait for some seconds, plug the usb pen-drive, wait 5-10 seconds and then try to select the usb drive from plop’s menu…April 16, 2022 at 6:20 pm #81499Moderator

::Instead of the plop cd you can also start the boot from the antiX DVD while your usb stick is plugged in.
Choose the from=usb option (in F4, if I remember right) to boot the DVD. The boot will start from DVD but continues with the usb stick.
It has to be the same version of antiX.Which version did you download exactly ?

::Hi,
You could trying booting into safe video mode. But the resolution won’t be as good as normal boot.Another method that worked for me is at the boot menu, press F4 for options, then select i915_invert. Then boot.
Then I was able to boot from the DVD on my hp laptop.
I don’t know if it will work in your system. Perhaps you can try.April 16, 2022 at 7:13 pm #81508Membersrgilbert
::One thing I found when installing on my DV5000 using the Plop cd was it couldn’t be a USB 3 thumb drive, but a USB 2 worked fine.

::I was able to get it to install via cli-installer.
What I had to do is disable all the boot options using f4.
However I must have done something wrong on the grub install because once I rebooted I was at a grub rescue prompt.April 16, 2022 at 8:15 pm #81513MemberPPC

::Hi! I’m glad you managed to get antiX working – it’s the perfect fit for such good (although quite outdated device).
To better used antix with so little RAM I advise you to read on the forum posts about how to make the best us of so little RAM.
Tips:
-Multimedia: that laptop is great for playing multimedia – Xine Media Player even manages to play most HD video on it (it’s the “xine-ui” package, in the repository)
-For browsing: use browsers adapted for low resources consumption – Palemoon and Seamonkey are available on the Package Installer. Links2 is already provided in antiX full – it renders most web pages with text and static images (that don’t rely on Javascript), although with some formatting problems, but most webpages are completely readable (press “g” to get a bar to enter a web address or click the toolbar on top for more options, Press “s” to get to the Bookmarks window).
For better modern web compatibility, try “surf browser” (it’s the “surf” package in the repository)- it’s very basic . without any patches – it only displays a single window with a webpage drawn inside it (press CTRL + g to enter a web address to go to)- that’s it, no bookmarks, history, tabs, password management, etc… The only downside: surf is slowwww and prone to crashing when running on devices with low RAM (I speak from experience). If you are into experimenting, you can try this surf build- https://github.com/mrdotx/surf – it includes the option to use tabs, and bookmarks (but I have not figured out how to use bookmarks) and some more patches
-To watch streaming video – don’t use a browser, use smtube or ytfzf (read on the recent thread about ytfzf for ways to get the most of this little gem)
-E-mail – don’t use webmail – try using Claws (included in antiX) or Seamonkey e-mail client (that is compatible with g-mail)
-For office work – I’m unsure if you’ll be able to run LibreOffice with large documents – but it should run fine, even in 512mb, as long as you don’t try to multi task. For word processing the cli application “wordgrinder” is great – handles great in low RAM and can import and export .odt documents.
-For File Management – make zzzfm your default File manager – it’s included in antiX.
-If you want a more modern look and feel install an enable the ft10-transformation package – it even adds some features to zzzfm, like a Trash Can, easy way to mount (preconfigured) cloud drives, mount network shares, etc…P.

::HI PPC,
would you please post the ram type voltage and speed needed for the DV1000. I found schematics but no technical specification.
when maybl8 knows what to search for the biggest performance boost would definitely be to max out ram. Second speed boost, fit SSD.- This reply was modified 1 year ago by ModdIt.

::PPC.
Thanks for all of those suggestions. I will definitely look into those.
What I am going to do with this laptop is get it working the best I can for as little money as possible and then give it to a person that needs a computer but can’t afford one. We have a facebook group here that donates items for free to people who need them. -
