      The file lu5884hjylrp.tmp has appeared on my display and I appear unable to remove it, i.e…

      asus@X71Q:~
      $ cd /home/asus/Desktop
      asus@X71Q:~/Desktop
      $ sudo rm lu5884hjylrp.tmp
      rm: cannot remove 'lu5884hjylrp.tmp': No such file or directory

      When I right click on the file and go to ‘Properties’, it indicates the file has ‘0 bytes (0 bytes)’. Is this what they call ‘ghost files’?
      Thanks for any help with this.

        First check whether this file exists in this folder, and what type it is. Maybe it’s a directory, then you need another command for removing it…

        Command for checking:
        ls -l /home/asus/Desktop

        Be aware in case you have set your system language to something different from English, this “desktop” folder is called differently. In this case it is translated, so you possibly have to replace the word in your shell commands respectively.

        Once you have located the file in its correct place, and checked its type and permissions, you probably will be able to remove it.

        Files of a size of zero bytes are not necessarily ghost files, a simple and freshly created text file with still no content also will have 0 bytes for example.

        Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

          Reboot and run fsck. Then see if the problem persists.

            @Robin @subluminal
            Thanks for your help guys. When I booted-up this morning, the problem seems to have unexpectedly disappeared, without me doing anything! The file is no longer displayed on the Desktop.
