      Hello everyone!

I am sorry to bother you guys again. I just installed Antix. I have an Ipad which I want to mount and access files. Antx wouldn’t mount it, so I looked in Synaptic. I found idevice-mounter. When I tried to install it, I received a message that it couldn’t be installed due to broken packages. Even after fixing broken packages, I received the same result.

I tried to install it via the terminal to see if I could get some more information. This is the response:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
iphone-antix : Depends: python-imobiledevice but it is not installable
Depends: python-plist but it is not installable

I have a 32 bit computer. When I checked for the buster packages at Debian/org, it had a 32 bit/x86 version for python-imobiledevice but NOT for python-plist(lib). Any suggestions? Any alternatives for idevice-manager?

Thank you! This is a wonderful community!

Hi! I would advise this procedure, when trying to install any application in antix:
1- Search for it in Package Installer an install it from there, if it’s available
2- Try to install it using Synaptic or “sudo apt install” from the terminal
3- Try to use the application in a “universal” format (.appimage or .flatpak -please note that .snaps are not compatible with antiX) or Install from a binary compressed format (a .tar file, etc)
4- Risk installing it from a .deb file (please avoid using .deb’s from a Ubuntu PPA, they may not be compatible and may break your system)

In your case, try Package Installer (it should be available from the icewm toolbar, or search for it in the menu, or using app-select) and install “iDevice Mounter”– you can search for “IOS”. It should take care of every dependency needed. If you still have problems with dependencies, then you probably broken your antiX install- report here with the error that pops up, se folks can try to help you fix it…

EDIT: just to check if “idevice mounter” had any problem, I tried installing it from Package installer- it installed fine, and installed this packages:

        “idevice-mounter ideviceinstaller ifuse iphone-antix libimobiledevice-utils python-imobiledevice python-plist”

        P.

Hey! Thanks for getting back to me so soon. I have tried the package installer, as you suggested (I previously had tried Synaptic and installation via the terminal). SAME result. Before the installer shut down, I saw a terminal window briefly pop up with the same message:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
iphone-antix : Depends: python-imobiledevice but it is not installable
Depends: python-plist but it is not installable

Do you have a 64 bit computer? I have my 32 bit set the “testing” repositories, which means (I guess) my pacakages would be from bullseye and not buster. Could this make a difference?

hi! I tested on a 64 bits machine, antix 19.3 full, unchanged Repositories…
            Hum…
            Try this:
            sudo apt purge iphone-antix
            sudo apt-get update –fix-missing

Then try installing from Package Manager…

If that does not work, try
            sudo apt install idevice-mounter ideviceinstaller ifuse iphone-antix libimobiledevice-utils python-imobiledevice python-plist

If you can run antix live (without persistence) try installing the package from the Package Installer there and see if it works- it may be some problem with your install/repositories…

            P.

I have retried installing with all three methods. I finally installed aptitude to get more information. It says “iphone-antix is not installable.” I am attaching the terminal screen below.

I assume there is something wrong with the Debian sources. Assuming you are running antiX 19 with Debian buster repos, you should be able to install idevice mounter and iphone-antix on a 32 bits system.

                  $ apt depends idevice-mounter iphone-antix
                  idevice-mounter
                    Depends: python3
                    Depends: python3-pyqt5
                    Depends: iphone-antix
                  iphone-antix
                    Depends: ideviceinstaller
                    Depends: python-imobiledevice
                    Depends: libimobiledevice-utils
                    Depends: libimobiledevice6
                    Depends: libplist3
                    Depends: python-plist
                    Depends: ifuse

The packages that fail for you are available in debian for i386 architecture:
                  python-plist
                  python-imobiledevice

I tired what you said… using antix live without persistence to try to install and see if testing repositories had something to do with my problem (I changed both antix.list and debian.list to testing)…. It still would not install and said that there was no package called iphone-antix…. Weird, huh

Change repos to buster just for these applications. Those packages are no longer in debian testing/bullseye. Will probably need more testing in antix bullseye a2 to figure out if ot works or if those packages need to be rebuilt.

ok… will do. I will change them back just for this install… thanks! By the way, when I tried to install python-plist using package installer, the “Install Package” button remained greyed out

Here’s how (where) you can check which packages are available for which debian suite:
                            https://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#search_packages
before clicking search, change the dropdown ~~ “all” instead of “stable”

Yes, these are unavailable from buster (and sid) repositories.
debian is in the process of dropping support for (and culling) python2.7 -dependent packages.

                            .
                            .
                            .

Because the debian imobiledevice packages for buster are relatively stale (2019), and the https://github.com/libimobiledevice project repository indicates that multiple significant bugs have been addressed in later versions, I would not recommend attempting to “rebuild” the old debian package for use with buster or bullseye. I’ll suggest that you click the github link, click “Issues”, (read the existing open/closed tickets) and if no one has yet inquired… open a ticket to inquire about the prospect of future availability in debian.

Nice to hear from you Skidoo! Tried switching all the repositories back, updating the repositories, and then installing via package manager and in terminal. I am attaching the terminal response. It still didn’t install, but progress? I don’t know… just a newbie…

What I am hearing is if I wait a while, things will all come together again and it will work, right?

The errors mean this package is no longer compatible with Debian testing/bullseye/sid. As skidoo mentioned, Debian is trying t remove python 2.7 applications little by little, because it is “no longer supported”.

You can no longer use these programs in testing. You will need to see what you need to do it using a different method, be it with ifuse, ideviceinstaller or something else.

Maybe this could also be reported to the MX Linux team, if they know an alternative, as they are the original creators (if I am not mistaken) of the applications.
