I’m running live, remastered. I used “codecs” to install livedvdcss2. I also installed: vlc, smplayer, and mplayer. I couldn’t get any of them to play a dvd. The vlc program got the furthest. It got the dvd menu on the screen but when I tried to play the video, it errored out. The error messages are below. Here is the machine:

      System: Host: antix1 Kernel: 4.10.5-antix.3-amd64-smp x86_64 bits: 64

I was trying to set this laptop up as a dvd player for a friend. I ended up installing vlc on Windows 10 which they were able to use. I’m rebuilding an older desktop system with NVidia graphics. When that’s done I will resume testing there. The laptop I was testing has built-in intel Bay Trail graphics. I tried both the default “modesetting” driver and the “intel” driver. The error messages changed but it still errored out in the same place. I tried setting the video mode/driver in vlc manually. It didn’t help but I didn’t try every option.

Here are the vlc error messages when using the “modesetting” driver:
[00007f38100009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
[00007f38100009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called

[00007f38100009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called

And here are the vlc error messages using the “intel” driver:
[00007f2dc80009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
[00007f2dc80009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called

I didn’t know how to get mpv to try to play a dvd. It seemed to only want video files but I am not familiar with it. I tried “mplayer dvd://1” which often does the trick but it couldn’t find the dvd. Perhaps it needed more configuration. Smplayer didn’t get to first base. When I tried to play the dvd it said something like “mplayer or mpv couldn’t find the dvd device” which is in accord with what happened when I tried to use mplayer directly.

I can’t do any more testing until I get the old desktop system rebuilt. Just now I got some hits with Google(Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_va_gl.so). It seems a lot of people are having similar problems.

My dvdrw drive on certain machines act hinky BitJam depending on the disk and dvdrw drive.

        I learned to go to

        https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-find-out-the-name-of-dvd-cd-rom-writer-blu-ray-device/

To make sure my dvdrw had the capability to read the kind of disk I inserted. Learning the dvd-r was a no go while dvd+r was capable on that dvdrw drive. Hope I am making sense.

I learned this because one disc would not work in one of my antix installs but if I moved the disc to another drive on another antix install. It would work. Confused the hell out of me till I figured out the hardware thing.

Thanks Roky! I’ve had problems in the past with a flaky drive on one of my desktop systems. I think this problem is with the video drivers and not the disc drive. I’m able to decode the dvd and even get to the dvd menu. It is when I try to play video that I get those vdpau errors and it craps out. I’m sure I tested this drive before with video dvds and bootable dvds to make sure it works. I got it from ebay to go into my only laptop that is big enough to have an optical drive.

A Google search for the error message shows that a lot of other people have run into similar problems and it doesn’t seem to be related to hardware. For some people the fix is to remove some video driver stuff and for other people adding it helps. The vdpau stuff offloads video decoding to the gpu which takes a load off of the cpu. But the vlc program can be finicky about vdpau drivers. I’d love to be proven wrong but my guess is that dvds aren’t playing OOTB for anyone (or anyone with a Bay Trail gpu) on antiX-17 even after installing libdvdcss2 and video players.

For me it seems the important message is
            libdvdnav: Suspected RCE Region Protection!!!

VDPAU is the hardware-accelaration for nvidia.I think the message means nothing until you have a nvidiacard.

all my antiX machines don’t have DVD drives, but I’ll try on live on the thinkpad tonight.

I know I tested this during beta phase. My dvd’s played in the default audio player (mpv I think) after having the libdvdcss stuff installed.

I do recall that for some reason the default language was not english, that’s how I know I tested.

Maybe you should try to install i965-va-driver and gstreamer1.0-vaapi

                https://packages.debian.org/stretch/i965-va-driver

If this packages exist, install that’s packages via backports repository

I have some dvds that get stuck at home menu. In vlc if I check the no menu/skip menu checkbox in the open disk dialog the video will play. I must wait through all the preview clips however.

One thing I have learned over the years of messing with videos and dvds is that some players do not play good with some brands of dvds. It is built into the firmware of the dvd player itself. I have had dvd players that will work fine with commercial dvds and professional-grade dvds, but will not play Maxwell, Verbatim, or Philips. Go figure.

                    That’s my two cents worth.
