I have a live USB of antiX 16 and attempted to add a patched kernel (4.9.75). Aptitude “suggests” that linux-firmware-image-4.9.75-antix.2-amd64-smp, but it is “UNAVAILABLE”.

Is it important to include this package? If so, where is it located, since it is not in the repositories that include the 4.9.75 kernel image package.

Appreciate response advising that I should install without this or if necessary, how to obtain.

      thanks in advance.

For antix16 its in the jessie repo.
        Already looked at the video?

short answer: not needed, that “suggests” is safe to ignore

          longer answer:
aptitude is seldom discussed, nor recommended, because its casual use will lead to “I don’t understand what it is asking me” situations exactly like this one.
When using apt-get or synaptic (vs aptitude), the pre-configured preferences shelter us from most of these trivial (and “I don’t need to understand”) decision points.
          edit: ^— …or antiX/MX packageinstaller

Anyone intent on using aptitude should must be prepared to read its documentation.
What does the documentation state regarding “suggests” vs “depends”?
I’ll paraphrase (might not be spot-on): a suggests reflects the scenario where aptitude recognizes that no currently-installed package on the computer depends on, nor recommends, the package.

The point: “suggests” is an even weaker reference than “recommends” (and an aptitude user is expected to recognize such)
A seasoned user might sudo aptitude why linux-firmware-image-4.9.75-antix.2-amd64-smp in order to investigate…

@caprea, yes, I had, thank you. It was clear (including the need for remastering). But it didn’t mention this package.

@skidoo, Thanks for response. I tried the query you suggested. It stated no such package exists.

So, I will follow the video and update without the firmware package <g>.

            Thank you both.

The package is not needed and in the past installing it conflicted with other firmware packages. That is why we do not make it available even in the repos (siduction and aptosid linux do the same fwiw).

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
