The OBS builds of ungoogled chromium are lagging behind latest which is 100.0.4896.75-1

I moved back to the portable version available from
      https://ungoogled-software.github.io/ungoogled-chromium-binaries/

This is a Userbuild so some trust is involved. My machine took too many hours to build the package so not my option.
Checksums for the download are available, it is advisable to use them.

Remove another version before first start and your config will be used.

Unpack the downloaded archive then peruse the readme.
I followed instructions for sandbox, renaming, setting permissions then group to root
cd in to the directory assuming downloads cd /home/yourusename/Downloads/chromium/ungoogled-chromium_100.0.4896.60-1.1_linux/
      1. Rename “chrome_sandbox” to “chrome-sandbox”
      2. Set the file mode to 4755 $ chmod 4755
      3. Set the group to root $ sudo chgrp root chrome-sandbox

I put the folder in opt, copy using sudo
Add a personal menu entry, the control center tool works fine, just chose add, take any offering from the application list,
rename to ungoogled or whatever you like. Change the link to point to the starter script which must be executable
Point to the icon and finish. I previously put the included icon in /usr/share/icons

Updates will not come through the package installer so user must check periodically.

Nice tip – just a warning- this version (and the appimage one) do not run on antiX 19.X (error: “version `GLIBC_2.29′ not found”)
I’ll test it on my antix 21 netbook later…

          Thanks PPC,
running fine on antiX 21, I only have one antiX 19 install on my Thinkpad, only needed for travel
and will be updated to 21 shortly.

GLIBC is a blocker for many appimages not just portable versions like this. I have not tried, wondering if we
could graft a newer glib package in to a folder in opt and point certain applications to that. Maybe a pig of a
job if recompiling needed. I tried repeatedly to get gimp latest compiled on bullseye. Failed dismally.

Installing a newer version is not recommended, I did it, in bravado while experimenting (gimp) without problems
but was warned that updates might be somewhat interesting. I followed a recommendation from anticapitalista to
          reinstall

The lib mismatch also blocks newest gimp version which only runs in testing.
Latest Bullseye repo version runs fine but is getting dated.

            Hi @Moddit,

Thank you for the instructions on installing the portable ungoogled chromium.

I was able to install the latest:
            Version 100.0.4896.75 (Official Build, ungoogled-chromium) custom (64-bit)

This version works very good on my antiX21. I was able to test on youtube, kimcartoon, animepahe, weather, etc.

I also tried out the ungoogled-chromium from the openSUSE repository as well that you had recommended. But that version was only ungoogled-chromium v95. That version has many bugs and had many crashes for me.

              Hi calciumsodium,
glad the new version is better for you. Seems to start in an instant on my I5 box.
Some additions for those unfamiliar with this excellent browser, applies to other chrome based browsers too.

The crashing issue on chrome based browsers is usually due not playing well with some hardware,
in my experience especially older Nvidia cards with the proprietary drivers.
After switching off hardware acelleration I had no more trouble in that direction.
In some cases build arch is problematic. One Eloston version was, or is built for I7, it runs on I5 but not I3
and below. And sandboxing which I did not want to switch off can cause trouble. I think mainly on low memory
              systems but unsure.

Users please watch cache size. Pretty sure that the latest version will, like all chrome based browsers build that up quickly.
Vivaldi is same although claiming light. One user had login failures due gigabyte sized browser cache, bad.

              Available settings are in chrome://flags/
chrome://chrome-urls/ gives links to a lot of interna of the browser.
Right click in a page opens a menu, shows a view page source button, click on an element in a page U Block offers
              to block it.

              Cache size:
Best fix below addition to .desktop-session/startup, after reboot cache is in temp so cleared on every new start.
If not rebooting often a cron job to delete cache might be a good idea. Not sure how gracefully the browser would
react so the script might have to be timed to a low or no usage period. Or be more complicated.

#Moves chromium cache to temp, thanks to xecure
#First line only needed if chromium cache exists in home
              [ -d "$HOME/.cache/chromium" ] && rm -rf $HOME/.cache/chromium
              mkdir -p /tmp/herold/.cache/chromium && ln -sf /tmp/herold/.cache/chromium /home/herold/.cache/chromium
              mkdir -p /tmp/herold/.cache/chromium/Default && ln -sf /tmp/herold/.cache/chromium/Default /home/herold/.cache/chromium/Default

The OBS builds of Ungoogled Chromium are still lagging way behind latest
which is available as 64 Bit Portable Vers. 100.0.4896.127-1
the build is from 2022-04-16 09:27:40.329257+00:00

                Download from https://ungoogled-software.github.io/ungoogled-chromium-binaries/

It is not noted whether this build includes a fix for known chromium exploit
fixed by google emergency bugfix release or even if Ungoogled Chromium is affected.

It is highly probable this version will not run on antiX19 Error: `GLIBC_2.29′ not found
Thanks for the note to PPC.

Latest version running fine on antiX21.

                  Warning regarding ungoogled chromium:

In Chrome 100.0.4896.127 für Linux, macOS und Windows two CVE have been fixed. CVE-2022-1364 High risk was present in the JavaScript Engine V8.
google seems very quiet about the second CV so maybe that one is the more vicious attack vector.

According to internet sources there have been successful attacks on systems using the older browser version.

Proceedure to obtain and install the latest unportable version is described in previous posts. It is safer to assume that the
older ungoogled chromium versions installable from OBS are exploitable until proved otherwise. Better safe than sorry…

I snagged the 64-bit UngoogledChromium Portable version today and I’m running it now on antiX 21.
It’s working fine. I grabbed the Portable Linux 64-bit 101.0.4951.64-1 version and downloaded it in tar.xz format.
Though I use primarily package formats in most distributions, tar, tar.xz and tar.gz formats are the ones I’ve actually worked with even prior to getting into every day Linux use because I used these file types when I was still using UNIX workstations on the job.

I’ve not been using this very long, but it seems quite solid; in just over a half hour of use I’ve had a few tabs open and I’ve been accessing the Webmail accounts I use, the antiX Forum and the ungoogled chromium site (to go back and verify which of the option/alternatives I chose to download). Looking good so far!

I grabbed the latest Ungoogled Chromium from the link so I have tried out a couple of them over the past few weeks.

The newest one is responsive; I’ll work with it more this weekend.
