Unplugdrive woes again.

Please, could somebody countercheck on antiX 21 :

The most recent unplugdrive version (0.93/0.93a) as delivered in antiX 21 doesn’t see some types of USB drives anymore. Obviously we face some kind of bug regression here, since in the archived version 0.91 this works flawlessly still (see attached screenshot). It doesn’t make any difference whether 0.93 is used with or without sudo, the drive will not show up any longer.

If you face problems unmounting specific types of USB-devices with the new version you might want to give the older version 0.91 from the archives a try. I had to downgrade to this version on my machines in order to be able to unmount one of the devices without typing the commands manually on console again and again. But keep in mind you can use 0.91 only sudoed, and it doesn’t support completely encrypted devices (encrypted partitions are supported already). In case of temporarily downgrading you may want to change the entries in the config files as described here for the even older 0.82c version already. Moreover the .mo type language files in the /usr/share/locale/‹languageID›/LC_MESSAGES system folder need to be renamed from unplugdrive.mo (ver0.93) to unplugdrive.sh.mo (ver 0.91).

I do hope we can fix this strange problem in the 0.93/93a Version again soon.

Checked 0.93b hotfix version on antix 19.3. “Sees” the drive again and unmounts it. Can’t check on antiX 21 by now, the live stick wouldn’t boot the PC. Maybe somebody else will report for antiX 21. Many thanks for this fast hotfix, Xecure! I would have needed much longer to work it out.

The following hint just in case somebody else besides me wants to use the most recent unplugdrive version on antiX 19:
When using 0.93/93a/93b on antiX 19 be aware the spindown of true rotationals will only work in sudoed mode, since the specially crafted pumount version Xecure has created for antiX 21 isn’t present in antiX 19, and there is no version check implemented within the script. This checking is normally performed during deb-package installation via apt. When copying the script file manually to the /usr/local/bin folder it will run in non-sudo mode with the improper pumount version as found in antiX 19, which can’t handle proper spindown.

Borrowing this thread to report a similar issue.

I booted antiX 21 from live usb. I noticed that the “Unplug Removable Device” tool does not allow me to unplug the live usb stick (sdb1 & sdb2), which is fine and makes sense.

However, later I plugged in another external usb drive. That new drive is properly recognized by antiX as sdc, and I can transfer data in and out of that that drive. Then I would like to unplug my sdc, but the “Unplug Removable Device” tool still shows only the grey sdb1 & sdb2. Could it be a bug that any drive after a live usb drive would not be detected by “Unplug Removable Device”, @Xecure?

@rayluo have you updated to the hotfix version 0.93b already? Looks to me like you are facing the very issue which is covered by this hotfix. To find out which version you are running call unplugdrive.sh from console window with its -​-​help command line argument.

Simple answer is: No. (see my screenshots above). It doesn’t matter in which order or how often different USB devices are plugged and their mountpoints are reassigned, we have designed unplugdrive to see and unmount all of them.

But if you want to make sure there isn’t another bug, please post the output of a run using its -​-​debug command line argument on console. This should reveal what’s going on actually.

Thanks for the quick response, @Robin. How do I install the hotfix 0.93b, then?

I ran unplugdrive.sh –help in an (almost) out-of-box antiX 21, its version was 0.93. Later I ran “antiX Updater” from the start menu. After that, the unplugdrive.sh –help gave me a 0.93a.

Hello rayluo, you have two options:

– 1st method (easy): Wait unil the hotfix has made its way into the antiX-repos. Then update your system again, exactly the way you already did. Version 0.93b will show up sooner or later.

– 2nd method (advanced, but immediately): Download the file manually from the git repo Xecure has pointed to some posts above. (Here you are additionally the direct download link for the hotfix 0.93b script file). Copy this file to the /usr/local/bin folder of your system.

This bug is addressed only in 0.93b. Please let us know whether this hotfix covers your issue already, or whether we’ll have to investigate further. Only in case this hotfix doesn’t solve the problem with your drive, you can try to downgrade temporarily to version 0.91 as I’ve described in one of the postings above. This version is structured internally completely different, so it might unmount your drive, even if speed optimised 0.93 series does not.

Thanks for the detailed guidance, Robin!

I tried option 2 and now I can confirm that the unplugdrive 0.93b fixed the issue I encountered. Now we are confident to want for the official release of that fix. (CC: @Xecure)
