Hi, running antiX 19.5 and like it a lot. Pretty new to Linux but learning.

Trying to get Anbox running. It needs 2 modules that aren’t in my kernel (4.9.0-294) but are included in kernel 4.17 and up. Manage Packages (in Control Centre) shows some 4.19.0 kernel images (same type – amd64).

Is it OK to update to a 4.19.0 kernel and is it pretty safe to do so? (laptop with one HD and no backup devices)

Any things to be careful of, or special things to do? (I searched Forums for Update Kernel and got 1400+ hits, don’t have time to read them all!)

antiX provides 4.19 and 5.10 series kernels too.
Try one of them via synaptic or cli-aptiX

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Hi, it is safe. You install the kernel(s) (sometimes, it is useful to install the corresponding headers as well – e.g. if you plan to compile SW), reboot and select which kernel to boot into.
If there is a problem, you reboot into your original kernel by selecting it in the boot menu.

There is a thread about bad resolution with 4.19 but fixed with 5.10.
That’s why I dare to recommend testing both choices, 4.19 and 5.10, and you may test which works the best for you.

PS: I assume that you run a bare metal install, i.e. no live-USB etc.

To complete, it is safe to install a new kernel because the old kernel wont get uninstalled. And if the new one won’t work you can still boot into the older kernel over the advanced options on the boot screen.

The easiest way for a newbie to install a kernel is with Package-Installer
menu > control center > Software > Package Installer > Kernel

Thank you all for the quick replies. I upgraded to a 5.10 kernel and the laptop is booting and running just like it did before.

If I can get Anbox working I’ll write up the steps I took and post in the antiX 19 forum, to help others who might want to do the same thing

BTW, anbox was already dissussed in this forum, see https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/anbox-on-antix/
