Any reason why Synaptics Package Manager will show packages as being “Upgradeable” yet the only option is to “Remove” or “Downgrade”? This is so for all packages.

      Regards,
      boombaby

          Dolph,

Any package “upgradeable” is colour-coded blue; “installed” are green; “not installed” are blank/white.

If I right-click on (say) the vlc package to upgrade it (since it is showing as blue, “upgradeable”) it only allows REMOVAL, or COMPLETE REMOVAL – and mark for “INSTALLATION”, or “REINSTALLATION” are blanked out.

          Is that clear enough?

          Regards,

OK, OK. I know its not Antix (one of my EQUAL top 4 distros) but is there an answer for this Synaptic Pkg Mgr question?

                  possibilities:
The apt preferences on your system might be configured to “prefer version from repoXYZ” (or from “stable”) rather than “always prefer the highest package version”.
Also, individual specific packages might be “pinned” to prevent against upgrade.

For a given package you can check
                  sudo apt-cache policy vlc

To learn what’s going on under the hood, you can skim the manpages
                  man apt-get
                  man apt.conf
                  apropos apt
…and you can sudo apt-config dump|more to view the currently-set preferences

Since synaptic works ok on antiX, we are just guessing why it isn’t working for you on that distro.
You’d probably get better and quicker help if you went to that distro’s forum.

One thing I did learn early on is to make sure you “RELOAD” the repos first. I can’t remember how many times I couldn’t do an upgrade because I forgot one simple step.

When you first start Synaptic, always do the RELOAD first. It will also let you know if a mirror is down for any reason. THEN you can continue to upgrade/update your programs.

I know. I felt silly after I realized that too.
