Perhaps what I still miss is a way to carry browser bookmarks forwards easily to the new install.
Even with the preserve-home option?
Otherwise the below three ways are probably as easy as one can get (if the home, and all of its content is not preserved):
1) I recently wrote in a post related to FireFox (running downloaded binary) that it is possible to backup the whole profile directory and force-copy it to the new one.
This transfers all bookmarks, history etc.
It worked for me in the case of *sufficiently* close ESR versions.
2) Export [to HTML] -> store -> Import.
3) Account to synchronize across devices.
