This post is for regular users of antiX-17.x series.
At some point in the near future, I’m going to provide an antiX-17.5 version.
This will be predominantly an upgrade within the default stretch repos.
However, I’m also thinking of including antiX based apps/upgrades from antiX-19 series (they will not break anything, I have been testing this for a while now). Some examples include the latest IceWM, fluxbox and herbstluftwm back-ported to stretch. And some new apps eg app-selct.
I also want to include libreoffice from stretch-backports. This upgrades libreoffice from version 5 to version 6.Most of the above may not be that controversial. However, I’m also thinking of upgrading eudev.
So, here’s the question:
Do you want your existing antiX-17.x to also be forced to upgrade to include the latest and greatest via a simple apt dist-upgrade?

Personally, I’m not running 17, but if I was, I think I’d prefer a dist upgrade solution, over a total reinstall – but either way, don’t forget to take a back up of your personal data first folks. 🙂

I am running 3 computers, all with 17.4 (32 bit). So, I am interested in a possible upgrade.
But, I’m not sure of the implications of your question.
Does this relate to continued upgrades of existing systems, or to new installations only?It’s hard to imagine much of an improvement over the present system.
I’m not familiar with the new apps mentioned. I am already using LibreOffice 6.Are there pros and cons to upgrading eudev?
(Quite a while back, there was an issue where deleting residual eudev files with symantic crashed the system.)pudding_and_tame
I would very much like an up grade path . I am very happy with my 17.2 edition and am sad to see it no longer supported . might just keep using it any ways .
not to be critical but i do not see much advantages in 19 that I would use
so an additional antix 17.5 would be great

This is what it actually states.

I stand corrected it has 2 months of support !
my understanding is that Ubuntu has a long term support of 10 years on some of their addition ( feel free to correct me )
and opensuse leap now has 10 years as well . ( feel free to correct me )
How long has 17.4 been supported ?
And will you extend this 17.4 past the 2 months left ?
I do not see much difference between 2 month and zero
in a world were 10 years of support is offered

If you want 10 years of support, use a distro that offers it.
You also need to improve your maths (3 months not two since it is October).antiX-17 was released in .. (do the research).

BRAVO, anticapitalista!
He’s building a new version to keep your machines working, and making it so its easy to upgrade it and keep it running newer code. If that’s not REAL support, I don’t know what is.
Who else DOES that? Its one thing to talk about support. anti REALLY DOES support his user base, even the old and slow machines.
As for the questions 17 came out in 2017, and can be supported only as long as the underlying programs are supported.
So how long are Ubuntu and Opensuse going to support their 32 bit distros? Many of the systems running 17 are doing so because they have problems running newer versions are 32 bit machines, and owned by people that don’t have the resources to buy something newer.
ps: Sorry, I typed too slow and anti beat me to the Submit button. Also, What good is 10 years of support if the distro version is not released at all.

Each version of antiX has been getting support for as long as the Debian that it is based on has been supported.
If you want to keep your specific computer running, install the next (19.4) or the latest, soon to be released (21). (Or keep running 17.)

Ubuntu LTS releases transition into Extended Security Maintenance (ESM) phase as the standard, five-year public support window comes to a close.
ESM provides five additional years of security maintenance, not application upgrades and updates.
Same goes in the case of SUSE.
If a user wants to live in a world of antique applications or has hardware which is unable to cope with any more modern applications fine.
antiX treads the line of keeping many up to date applications and code running on old devices very successfully and is neither a corporation
nor does it have a billionair owner.You want an extended security support a decent donation to antiX might make that possible, in any case the snide remarks about a free to use system with
a very high level of support both on this forum and from developers, especially anticapitalista are in very bad taste.You want ubuntu or suse extended support you are free to move at any time…
Well this frequent up grade is a draw back to antix
but there are good things here as well
and in this thread you seemed to be talking about extending the life of 17 . I would be for that
I find these frequent up grade that offer little increase Function that I use . A problem
there is nothing in the up grades I want . It is of no benefit too meI was just noting other disto seem to be going to longer support periods and the commercial products like red-hat and opensuse offer longer support periods . Seems to be what the market want like me.
And I believe slack wear and Ubuntu offer long support periods as well not to belabor the point
But 17 will soon end if not extended . And mostly I am looking for stability and security
and you are right I could go with some other distro .
I tried 19 . no sound after installing on the same box antix 17 had sound on and worked fine
started to look for a fix but then decided to see how long . 19 is supported it say on your forums- said end of support was 2022 to 2025 . well antix 17 ends in 2022 .
I downloaded opens use leap it took time and effort to get it to work with jwm but I did and it has a longer support periods

regarding sound. If you ever run live &/or install but sound is not working out-of-the-box, remember to go to the Control Centre (or run ‘alsamixer’) in a terminal, to adjust volumes. Sometimes certain channels are muted on first boot (until adjusted). My own experiece is that antiX behaves pretty consistently across the currently supported releases regarding sound.

I’m not a moderator- but I would say not “out of line”, but “off topic”.
Hum, this thread is about “upgrading option”…PS: I don’t think it’s good policy to enter someone’s home and say “I disagree with your politics”. We have to respect our hosts, even if we disagree with them.
PS2: You don’t have to agree with anticapitalista’s political views to use antiX. I’ve been using antiX, and contributing to it for quite some time, and guess what: politics never came up…
PS3: Don’t freak out with firefox’s bookmarks… If you don’t like them, just delete them all…P.
