ytfzf is an application that allows you to search and view (using a media player like mpv) videos from some streaming services. This application comes with antiX 21 and is installable under antiX 19.

It’s great, but ordinary computer users can find that, by default, it has a few “problems”:
      1-it’s a terminal application only
2-it does not offer video thumbnails
3-it only allows to see one video then you have to do a video search again

      “Solutions” to this “problems”:
1- There are GUI’s for ytfzf but they are not easily installable. If using a terminal application is as problem for you, try smtube instead, but… read on, because you can use mouse input and, with thumbnails on, ytfzf does not look scary at all.

2- If lack of thumbnails is a problem for you try this:
First install the needed dependencies. In antiX 19 (but not in antiX 21) you can:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install python3-ueberzug w3m
Then try running ytfzf with thumbnails enabled (there are 2 ways – one is inserting the option you want in it’s config file, the other is running ytfzf with the correct flags- you can also edit it’s .desktop file to use those flags by default, if you launch it from it’s menu entry or icon):
      ytfzf -t --thumb-viewer=w3m
3- If you want to be able to open more results of your search other than just the first one you launch. use the “-l” flag. Ex:
      ytfzf -l -t --thumb-viewer=w3m

Tip: If you are running ytfzf because your computer is low on resources and can’t play videos with a very high resolution, please take a look at this thread (that shows how to select a low resolution for the videos that will be streamed) – https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/how-to-change-video-resolution-in-ytfzf/#post-81311

Edit: I forgot about this one- if you want to easily search for another video after seeing the results of your previous search, use the “-s” flag, that way you can keep searching for many videos without having to keep restarting ytfzf Ex:

      ytfzf -l -s -t --thumb-viewer=w3m

To have thumbnails in antiX 21’s ytfzf:
download and install (for antiX 64bits, see below link for the 32bits version) http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/u/ueberzug/ueberzug_18.1.9-2_amd64.deb Install ueberzug, now available in the Repository (Many thanks, anticapitalista!)

and then simply use the -t flag in ytfzf (no need to use “–thumb-viewer=” because ueberzug works great by itself in antiX 21), Example:

      ytfzf -l -s -t

        Hi PPC,
to select multiple entrys for playing, move to an entry, press tab, move to next press tab,
after the final title is selected press enter to play. You can also move up and down in the searchlist
using tab select to play titles the way you want.
Using the history you can also build playlists. /home/yourusername/.cache/ytfzf/search_hist
I am still exploring but now by far my most used player.
The application, it is actualy a script residing in /user/local/bin and next level convenience along with
efficiency. Among the best of the best of the best.

          Ueberzug for 32bits:
          http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/u/ueberzug/ueberzug_18.1.9-2_i386.deb

I can only see a maximum of 19 entries in the searches, do you know how we can increase the number of entries?

            You probably see 20 results:
YouYube displays 20 results per page, if you want more results use --pages=<amount_of_pages_to_display>

            Ex:

            --pages=2

            displays 40 results.

Warning: do not try to display too many pages of results or ytfzf load time will take ages…

            P.

ueberzug_18.1.9-1 is now in antiX-21 repos

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
