A link to Viber (for people who don’t know what this is) would have helped.

As you say, it seems there is no package for Linux 32 bits, but some people have got it to work using wine and the windowsXP viber installer

Thank you for the quick response.
I tried wine and unfortunately it didnt work.
It opens the installer in the wine desktop window but after a few seconds it stops and says
“one or more issues caused the setup to fail”
without any further explanation, but its not important so i will not pursue this any further 🙂
          Thank you again.

It is a pity that Linux 32bits support is not contemplated anymore by big companies and developer groups.
If you discover some other way to get it to work, let us know. If I find anything I will also let you know.

                This!

It is a pity that Linux 32bits support is not contemplated anymore by big companies and developer groups.

Not just for Viber, which is what I am also trying to get working, but for all software available for Linux in general allow.

If you use Windows, your chances of getting 32 bit software for some version of it that is officially discontinued such as 7 is decent. Not guaranteed, but possible. Apple has obsoleted anything but 64 bits, and will no doubt soon obsolete x86-64 in favor of Arm64 (their own in house Axx CPUs), because they are too cool for school. Sadly Linux seems to be following Apple’s example of planned obsolescence more than Microsoft’s backwards compatibility!

Who would have thought there was anything about Microsoft’s business practices worth emulating?!

If there is anything that would set Linux apart from closed source and make it more attractive to those who want control of their own OS (which Microsoft won’t allow!) or the use of hardware from multiple vendors (which Apple will sue you for!), good backwards compatibility would be it.

Alas, most programmer types seem to be into the “new and shiny”, and appear to have no interest in such things.
As an admin. and non-programmer, I feel abandoned by them, and short of getting a Computer Science degree, unable to do anything else about it.

I understand your frustration – but it has nothing to do with “Microsoft” vs “Linux” “business plan”- there are plenty of Linux distros that have perfectly working 32bits versions, antiX included. The problem is that the people that make applications are slowly stopping to make/provide 32bits versions of their apps- to save work, since 32bits cpu’s are too old and are dying away of old age – I say this, even my best laptop is a 32bits HP, that runs much better than my 64bits (more moderns) netbook…

For example- the only reason you can’t watch netflix or similar streaming services in a 32bits linux machine is because google, that makes the closed source dependency that browsers need to play DRM files, decided that 32bits would no be supported any more- their app seems to install fine in 32bits machines, but just refuses to work… just because… well google decided to make it so!

Edit: probably the only reason you can find more 32bits applications for Windows than for Linux is this:
                  – the apps you are searching are closed source (like, I assume, Viber is), where made for 32bis and are still available on the internet, if if they are no longer offered in the official web page, they have copies of the installers laying around countless web services… most apps for Linux are available in the repositories, that usually don’t include closed source software, if an app’s 32bits Linux version disappears from the official web page, there, it’s probably gone forever, you have no other place to find it

…and trust me, Linux does much more to fight planned obsolescence (and keep computers out of dumpsters for some more years) than closed source O.S.’s – My old laptop was bought with Windows XP installed – XP is no longer supported, the next versions, Vista and 7, haven’t been supported for a long time… It won’t be long to 8.X stops being supported…
But you can install many 32bits distros on computers that have Windows XP, Vista or 7 (hell, even some that had Windows 98 or 95) and use those devices to run a web browser or an office suite, and thousands of applications that have 32bits version… Unfortunately, we have to realize- 32bits CPU’s, for the Industry and most of the Software Dev’s, is dead and buried – they don’t think it even worth the hassle of host old (but functional) 32bits versions of their apps (so why would they maintain those versions?

                  P.

I tried wine and unfortunately it didnt work.

A little tip: sometimes I noticed that installing wine using atp or synaptic, the program didn’t work.
Instead it worked properly installing wine using their app named “software installer” that is located in the tray.
Its icon is a rectangle with a down arrow.

                    Good luck 🙂
