Video (resolution) problem – Nvidia

I searched the most recent 2-3 pages of the hardware forum, and while I saw similar posts, none were identical, so I started a new thread. If this is covered in the documentation or a post I missed, please leave a link and I’ll read it.

I have a desktop – HP Pavilion p7-1054.
Two GPUs:

builtin AMD 4200 and PCIE Nvidia GT 620. Both currently use the open source drivers.
Radeon and Nouveau respectively.

However, the Nvidia works to load the BIOS, run Grub, and on a text based virtual terminal, but fails to load X11 via VGA. The screen shows one of those generic “out of range” messages like the resolution the Nvidia is outputting is not supported. This error comes up after grub but instead of any desktop or login screen.

The exact same screen and cable run on the AMD Radeon 4200 just fine.

So it appears to be a software bug or driver glitch rather than hardware.

Is there any settings to force a known good resolution or other fix for this?

I tried passing vga=773 and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768x8 to the kernel at boot and preserved the latter with sudo update-grub, but it doesn’t fix it.

Would the proprietary Nvidia driver help?
I don’t need it for performance, yet, but if it detects the resolution better I’m willing to try it.

I can use the legacy 390 driver.
