Some of the short bits of video that are available on social media and elsewhere refuse to play visibly on my PC installation while others run ok and can be seen. At times the ones that refuse are there behind the grey screen, as I can see individual frames when I drag the cursor along the progress strip. This does not seem to affect videos that have obviously come from a mobile phone.

My installation is completely up to date, but in any case I have a laptop running 17.4.1 which exhibits the same problems, and another PC running 16.4 which behaves the same.

I suspect there may be some module I have failed to install perhaps, or some aspect of setup not completed?

Thanks in advance for all responses.

        Hi, roland.

Are the videos playing on the browser or on a specific player app like VLC?

If you think it is a video codec problem, try installing the non-free Video codecs (you can install them from antiX package installer (search codecs) or from Control Centre > Drivers > Codecs Installer).

If it browser related, maybe you could try with a chromium browser, as firefox (at least ESR on a slow CPU device) tends to be slow/buggy on some video stuff on social media.

Always in the browser which is invariably Chromium. Some will run visibly, others are running but I don’t see them, either the virtual screen is grey or at times black but a progress bar if visible shows the play advancing. I have used Firefox in the past but do not care much for it. Chromium runs faster and I like the options it has available. I have installed all the codecs available with Package Installer, and in the drivers install section of Control Centre. I keep the systems updated every 2 weeks or so. Having 3 PCs and a laptop behaving the same way with slightly different releases leaves me mystified.

Can you post a link to a video that plays and one that does not so we can compare.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I found one this morning that will run under Firefox but is not visible under Chromium. I’ll supply the details if I can find them again. I have also noticed that Chromium fails occasionally with the ‘Aw Snap!’ message on a blank screen when Firefox will continue with the same URL but I thought this looked like a different condition and possibly not related to these video troubles. Could either problem be related to ad-blockers which I use?

I don’t have a facebook account, so I cannot check the link, but I have 2 theories:
                  1. It may be the adblocker. Facebook videos will sometimes play some adds, so try dissabling teh adblocker and test if you can see the videos.
                  2. Maybe you have to dissable Hardware decoding in chromium. (reenable it if this doesn’t work). In the address bar right:
                  chrome://flags
Try dissabling Hardware-accelerated video decode. Restart browser and see if this helps.

I think you will have to test different stuff in chrome options or move to a different browser.

By the way, test with a different adblocker if option 1 is the reason. Maybe Ublock Origin (it works well for me).
